What is voice search optimisation and how does it affect SEO?
Voice search lets people search the web by speaking instead of typing. When someone asks their phone, smart speaker or car system a question, the device sends that spoken query to a search engine and reads the answer back. As more households adopt smart speakers and more people use voice typing on their phones, the way people search is slowly changing, and that change matters for SEO.
How voice search is different from typed search
When you type a search, you tend to shorten it. You might type "pizza near me" or "plumber Barnstaple". When you speak the same query, you say something closer to "where is the best pizza place near me?" or "who is a good plumber in Barnstaple?" Voice searches are longer, more conversational and more likely to be phrased as a full question.
Google has adapted to this shift. Its systems now understand natural language well enough to match a spoken question to the right answer, even when the words on the page are not an exact match. That means the old habit of optimising for short, chopped-up keyword phrases is less useful than it used to be. Writing content that answers a question naturally, in the way a person would ask it, is now a better investment.
What voice search means for SEO
Voice search does not have its own ranking algorithm. The same Google index that powers typed search also powers voice results. What changes is which result gets chosen to be read aloud.
Most voice answers come from featured snippets, the boxed answer that appears at the top of Google's search results. If your page holds the featured snippet for a question, it is the most likely candidate to be read out by Google Assistant, Siri or Alexa. Winning the snippet is therefore the main voice search SEO strategy.
The steps that help a page earn a featured snippet are the same steps that help it rank well in general:
Answer the question directly. Put the answer in the first paragraph after the heading, keep it concise and make it stand alone. Google likes answers that a person can read without needing context.
Use a clear heading that matches the question. If someone asks "how do I optimise for voice search," your H2 should say that exact thing, not something like "voice considerations."
Format for scannability. Bullet lists, numbered steps, short paragraphs and bold key terms all help Google identify the answer-worthy passage.
Add FAQ schema. Structured data that marks up questions and answers gives Google a machine-readable version of what your page covers, which is exactly what an AI assistant needs to decide whether to cite you.
Do voice search results have their own analytics?
Not directly. Google Search Console does not have a "voice" filter. But you can approximate voice search performance by looking at your query data: filter for longer, question-based queries (sentences that start with who, what, where, when, why, how) and check whether any of your pages appear for them. An increase in impressions for question-style queries is a good sign that your content is being picked up by voice-enabled searches.
Victory Digital's Metrona platform tracks how often your brand appears across AI-driven surfaces including ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which overlap heavily with the voice search ecosystem. If your content is structured to be cited by an AI assistant, it is structured to be read aloud by a voice assistant too.
Does every business need voice search optimisation?
Not every business will see an immediate return from voice search work. Local businesses, especially those in hospitality, trades and retail, tend to benefit most because voice searches are often local and action-oriented ("find a cafe open now near me," "book a gas engineer"). For B2B companies and national service businesses, the overlap with AI search and featured snippet optimisation means the same content work helps multiple channels at once.
