What is topical authority and how do you build it?
Topical authority is the degree to which Google sees your website as a trusted, comprehensive source on a subject. It is built by covering a topic in depth across many connected pages, so that when someone searches for anything related to that subject, your site is one of the first answers. For most businesses it is the difference between ranking for one lucky keyword and owning a whole search landscape.
Why Google rewards topical authority
Google's job is to answer questions with the best available source. A site that has written thoroughly about a subject, linked its pages together and been referenced by others looks like the expert. A site with one thin page on the subject does not. This is why the ranking factors that dominate search results tend to reward depth: content relevance, internal links, backlinks, Core Web Vitals and experience signals all point in the same direction.
The demand for this kind of content shows up in the search data. Over the last six months, queries like "seo ranking factors" and "google ranking factors seo checklist" generated more than 25,000 impressions with almost no clicks, because the results are dominated by generic listicles rather than genuine expertise. There is room for sites that actually answer the question.
How topical authority is built
Topical authority comes from four things working together:
- Cluster content: one thorough pillar page on the core subject, with supporting articles answering every related question. Our Help & Advice library works this way, with each article covering one question and linking back to the services it relates to.
- Internal linking: each article links to the pillar and to sibling articles, so Google can map the whole subject and pass authority around the cluster.
- Entity coverage: consistent naming, contact details and schema that help Google connect your pages to your real-world business.
- Ongoing updating: refreshed content and new articles that show the subject is still being maintained.
The practical steps
Start with one subject you want to be known for. List every question a customer might ask about it, then build a pillar page that answers the biggest question and one article per subtopic. Link every subtopic article to the pillar and to its neighbours. Publish on a steady rhythm, then watch which questions still go unanswered and fill those gaps next.
It is not a quick fix. Building genuine authority takes months of consistent work, which is why our SEO packages run on three or six month terms rather than one-off fixes.
How to measure topical authority
You can track it in two ways. Your free SEO report shows which queries your site already appears for and where the gaps are. Metrona then tracks your visibility in AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which increasingly reward the same kind of comprehensive, well-structured content. The client dashboard brings both together month by month.
Done properly, this is the work that produces compound results. TrustATrader grew organic traffic by 400% and Home Instead by 251%, on the back of structured content built around clear topics.
