How to earn backlinks without paying for them
Backlinks are links from other websites to yours, and they are one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which pages deserve to rank. Earning them does not have to cost money. The honest routes are content worth linking to, digital PR, fixing unlinked mentions and good directory listings. If you are new to the subject, our guide to what counts as a backlink covers the basics first: https://victory.digital/help-advice/what-counts-as-a-backlink/
Why backlinks still matter
Google treats a link from another site as a vote of confidence. A page with links from relevant, trusted websites tends to rank higher than one without them, and the quality of the linking site matters more than the count. That is why buying links is a bad idea. Paid link schemes break Google's guidelines, can trigger a manual penalty, and usually come from low quality networks that do more harm than good. Earning a link because someone found your content useful is slower, but it lasts.
Create something worth linking to
The foundation of earned links is content that answers a question better than anyone else. Original research works especially well, because journalists and bloggers cite statistics. A survey of your own customers, a dataset you have collected, or a guide built around genuinely useful numbers gives other sites a reason to reference you. Think about what only you know. If you run a service business, that might be anonymised data from your own results. We track clients' organic growth in the client dashboard (https://victory.digital/client-dashboard), and figures like these are exactly what earns a mention.
Digital PR and unlinked mentions
Digital PR is the practice of building relationships with journalists, bloggers and industry sites so they link to you. Find the outlets your customers read, follow the writers who cover your industry, and offer a useful angle or a comment when a relevant story breaks. A quote in a roundup often arrives with a link back to your site.
A related tactic that is easy to overlook is finding unlinked mentions. Search for your business name and check anywhere it appears without a link. When you find one, contact the site owner, thank them for the mention and ask them to add a link. It is polite, low effort and surprisingly effective, because the site has already decided you are worth mentioning.
Directories and local listings
Genuine business directories can still earn useful links, especially for local businesses. Relevance and quality are what count. Industry-specific directories, professional bodies and your local Chamber of Commerce are usually worth joining. Avoid the temptation to submit your site to hundreds of spam directories. Google has little patience for link schemes of any kind, and a pile of irrelevant links can do real damage. Our article on whether a natural link profile is important explains why: https://victory.digital/help-advice/is-a-natural-link-profile-important/
Make it a habit
Earned links are not a one-off project. They come from a consistent programme: publish useful content, build relationships, check for unlinked mentions and review your progress. A free SEO report (https://victory.digital/run-a-seo-report) shows where your site stands today, and it takes about a minute to run.
If this feels like a full-time job, that is because it is. It is a core part of the SEO service we run for clients, and the SEO packages page (https://victory.digital/seo-packages) shows the real packages and pricing, from GBP 980 per month. If you would rather leave link building to us, our link building service is a good place to start: https://victory.digital/link-building
