How to get more Google reviews for your business

Cai 4 min readSearch Engine Optimisation

Google reviews are one of the strongest trust signals a small business can have. They appear directly in search results next to your Google Business Profile, and they influence whether someone picks you over a competitor.

A steady flow of positive reviews also helps your local SEO. Google factors review quantity, recency and average rating into local pack rankings. More reviews means more visibility, which means more enquiries.

The good news is that most customers are happy to leave a review if you ask them at the right moment.

Why Google reviews matter for small businesses

Think about the last time you searched for a plumber, a restaurant or a hairdresser. You probably scanned the star rating before you clicked anything. That is how your customers shop too.

Google reviews affect your business in three ways:

Trust. A business with 20 recent reviews looks more reliable than one with none. People trust the judgement of other customers.

Visibility. The local pack (the three businesses Google shows at the top of a local search) weights review signals heavily. More reviews and a higher rating help you appear there.

Conversion. A customer who sees positive reviews is far more likely to call or visit. The reviews do part of your selling for you.

When and how to ask for a review

Timing matters. The best moment to ask is right after a positive interaction, when the customer is still feeling good about their experience.

Ask in person. If you run a shop or meet customers face to face, a simple "if you have a moment, a Google review would really help us" works. Have a link ready to send them.

Send a follow-up email. After a completed job or service, send a thank-you email with a direct link to your Google review page. Keep it short: "Thank you for your custom. If you enjoyed our service, please leave a review here."

Use a text message. SMS has the highest open rate of any channel. A short text with the review link arrives when the experience is still fresh.

Use a QR code. Print a QR code that links directly to your Google review page. Put it on receipts, invoices, tables or your shop counter. Customers scan it with their phone camera and leave a review in under a minute.

The golden rule: never offer an incentive. Google strictly prohibits offering discounts, freebies or prizes in exchange for reviews. You can ask, but you cannot pay.

What to say in your review request

Keep it simple and personal. A template like this works well:

"Hi [Name], thank you for choosing [Business Name]. We hope you are happy with [product/service]. If you have a moment, a Google review would mean a lot to us. Here is the link: [URL]. Thank you."

Add a photo of the team or the finished work to your request email. Personal touches get higher response rates.

How to handle negative reviews

No business gets it right every time. A negative review is not the end of the world. In fact, how you respond to it says more about you than the review itself.

Reply promptly and professionally. Thank the reviewer for their feedback, apologise for their experience and offer to make it right offline. "Please contact us at [email/phone] so we can put this right."

Never argue publicly. A defensive response damages your reputation more than the original complaint.

Google allows business owners to report reviews that violate its policies (spam, fake reviews, profanity). Use this sparingly and only when the review breaks the rules.
