What is Semrush and how can small businesses use it for SEO?

Semrush is an all-in-one SEO, content marketing and competitor research platform used by businesses and agencies to improve their search visibility. It brings keyword research, site audits, backlink analysis, rank tracking and PPC tools into one dashboard so you can see how your website performs and where your competitors are winning.

If you are running your own small business marketing, Semrush gives you a view of the search landscape that is otherwise hard to piece together from free tools alone. With the right data, you can decide which keywords to target, which pages need work and what your competitors are doing that you are not.

The Keyword Magic Tool is where most people start. Enter a seed term like "digital marketing services" and Semrush returns thousands of related keywords with search volume, keyword difficulty score and trend data, so you can pick the ones your site can realistically rank for. The Domain Overview report shows your site's organic search traffic, estimated traffic cost and top-ranking pages at a glance.

The Site Audit tool crawls your website like Google does, and flags technical issues such as broken links, slow pages, missing meta tags and crawl errors. For a small business without a dedicated developer, this is the fastest way to find the problems that are holding your rankings back.

On the competitive side, the Domain Analytics report lets you compare your site against up to five rivals side by side. You can see which keywords they rank for that you do not, where their backlinks come from and which pieces of content drive their traffic. That gap analysis feeds directly into your own content and link-building plan.

Semrush also tracks your rankings daily. You set the keywords that matter to your business and the Position Tracking tool shows your average position and estimated traffic for each one over time. That means you can see whether your SEO work is moving the needle without logging into Google Search Console every day. The Brand Monitoring tool watches for mentions of your business name, while the Content Marketing toolkit helps you plan, brief and measure the performance of blog posts and guides.

The platform is not free, but the pricing model scales. There is a free tier that gives you limited access to most tools with a handful of reports per day, and paid plans start at a monthly subscription. Most small businesses get value from the Pro or Guru plans, which add historical data and extended reporting. There is also a specific solution for agencies managing multiple client accounts.

What Semrush cannot do is replace judgement. The data tells you which keywords have volume and which pages are broken, but deciding what to write, how to position your business and which links to pursue is still the work of a skilled marketer. Used well, the platform shortens the time from audit to action by putting all the data in one place.
