How to get your business to appear in AI Overviews
Google's AI Overviews are the boxed answer that appears at the top of many search results. When a question triggers one, Google generates a summary from sources it trusts and shows it before any of the ten blue links. Getting your business into that answer is now one of the highest value SEO goals, because the summary is what the searcher reads first, and the sources it cites get the clicks.
The good news is that AI Overviews do not reward tricks. They reward the same things that have always made a website trustworthy, applied more strictly. If you answer the question your customers actually ask, and you make that answer easy for Google to read, you give yourself a fair chance of being cited. Here is how to do it, step by step.
1. Answer the real question directly. AI Overviews are built to summarise. A page that states its answer in the first paragraph and then explains is far easier to cite than one that buries the point. When you know the question a customer types, write the answer to it in plain language at the top of the page.
2. Structure your content so a machine can read it. Use one clear H1 and descriptive H2s that match the question. Keep paragraphs short. Use lists for anything countable. Google breaks a page into passages, and well marked sections are far more likely to be chosen as a source.
3. Add structured data. Schema.org markup tells Google what your content means, whether that is FAQ schema for questions and answers or Article and Product schema where relevant. Pages with clean schema are easier for Google to understand and easier to cite. It is not a guarantee, but it removes the guesswork.
4. Build consistent entity signals. Google decides who you are by seeing your name and details in the same form everywhere: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories and reviews. A business with consistent entity signals is easier for an AI to describe confidently, and confident descriptions get cited.
5. Get cited elsewhere and cite yourself. AI Overviews favour sources with authority. That authority comes from genuinely useful pages, links from other trusted sites, and mentions of your name in places Google already trusts. Make sure every claim on your site is backed by evidence, because a summary is only as good as the sources it draws on.
6. Measure what appears in AI answers. You cannot improve what you cannot see. Our platform Metrona tracks when a client's brand is named across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and whether Google's AI Overviews cite their pages. That visibility data is how you know the work is paying off.
What does not work? Keyword stuffing, doorway pages and content written purely for an algorithm. Google's systems are built to filter these out, and an AI Overview built on weak sources is one Google quickly replaces. The businesses that win AI Overviews are the ones that write accurate, well structured pages about what they genuinely do.
The same approach sits behind the results we report for clients. Home Instead saw organic traffic up 251% and ad conversions up 3,446%. TrustATrader grew organic performance by 400%. Sienna X saw organic visibility up 522%. None of that came from shortcuts. It came from building pages that answer real questions and making them easy for search systems, including AI, to read.
