What is an SEO-friendly URL structure and how do you create one?
An SEO-friendly URL is a web address that is short, descriptive and easy for both search engines and humans to read. It tells both Google and the person clicking what the page is about before they arrive.
A clean URL is one of the most basic yet overlooked ranking factors. Google recommends using descriptive, simple URLs, and research consistently shows that users are more likely to click a link when the URL makes sense. What makes a URL SEO-friendly
A well-optimised URL follows a handful of clear rules.
Keep it short. Google truncates long URLs in search results, and users scan the visible part first. A URL like /content-marketing-services is better than /our-professional-content-marketing-services-for-small-businesses.
Use hyphens to separate words. Google treats hyphens (-) as word separators but underscores (_) as word joiners. So /seo-services is read by Google as "seo services" while /seo_services is read as "seoservices" - a single word that means nothing. Always use hyphens.
Stick to lowercase. /About-Us and /about-us are technically different URLs to a web server and can split ranking signals between the two. Use all lowercase to avoid confusion.
Include your target keyword. A URL that contains the page's primary keyword gives both Google and the searcher an immediate relevance signal. If the article is about managed WordPress hosting, the URL should say /managed-wordpress-hosting rather than /page-7.
Avoid stop words. Words like "and", "the", "for" and "of" add length without meaning. /services-for-small-businesses becomes /small-business-services without losing clarity.
Keep the folder structure flat. A URL like /services/web-design/ is fine; /services/uk/south-west/devon/web-design/burton/ creates unnecessary depth. Google can crawl deep URLs, but flat structure is better for user navigation and sharing.
Why URL structure matters for SEO
URLs matter for five reasons.
Google uses the URL as a content signal. While it is a small ranking factor compared to content relevance or backlinks, a descriptive URL helps Google understand what the page is about before it fully crawls it.
Users click better URLs. A Danish study found that clean URLs increase click-through rates by up to 25% compared with garbled query-string URLs. When a searcher sees /dog-food-guide, they know exactly what they are getting before they click.
URLs appear in search results. Google shows the URL above the page title in mobile results and in the green line on desktop. That visible text is real estate - make it count.
URLs get shared and copied. When someone links to your page on social media or pastes it into an email, the URL is the permanent identifier. A clean, descriptive URL makes your content look professional.
Duplicate content protection. If your CMS generates multiple URLs for the same page (/product?id=123 and /product/123 and /product/123/blue), search engines must work out which one is canonical. A clean default URL prevents that confusion.
How to set up SEO-friendly URLs
The best time to fix your URL structure is before you build the site. Map out the hierarchy, plan your slugs and set your CMS to auto-generate clean URLs from page titles.
In WordPress, go to Settings > Permalinks and select the "Post name" option. That gives you /seo-friendly-url/ instead of /2026/10/24/seo-friendly-url/. Most website builders like Shopify, Wix and Squarespace let you edit the slug before publishing - look for the URL or slug field in the page settings.
If you are redesigning a site or moving platforms, this is the critical moment to get URLs right. Changing URLs on a live site requires 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones, otherwise you lose ranking signals and traffic. Ask your developer to redirect every old URL to its new equivalent before you launch.
What to avoid
Avoid dates in URLs unless the content is genuinely time-sensitive (/budget-2026 makes sense; /seo-guide-2022 looks stale). Avoid query parameters for user-facing URLs - /page?id=42 is not descriptive. And never change a published URL without setting up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
URL structure is a small factor that compounds over every page on your site. Getting it right from the start means every page works a little harder for your rankings.
