How to use an SEO checklist for your website

Cai 3 min readSearch Engine Optimisation

An SEO checklist is a practical list of tasks you can run through to make sure your website is properly optimised for search engines. Without one, it is easy to miss important steps or waste time on fixes that do not move the needle. A good checklist keeps you consistent and helps you spot gaps before they become ranking problems.

Google's algorithm considers hundreds of signals when deciding which pages rank. You cannot control all of them, but you can control the fundamentals. An SEO checklist organises those fundamentals into a repeatable workflow.

Start with the free SEO report at https://victory.digital/run-a-seo-report. It audits your site for technical and content issues and gives you a prioritised list of fixes. That list is your starting checklist. From there, expand into four categories.

Technical SEO checklist

Crawlability comes first. Check that Googlebot can reach your pages. Open Google Search Console and look at the Index Coverage report. Pages listed as "Crawled but not indexed" or "Discovered but not indexed" need attention. Check that your XML sitemap is submitted and current, and that robots.txt is not blocking important pages.

Page speed is the next layer. Run your site through the free SEO report or Google's PageSpeed Insights. Aim for a passing Core Web Vitals score on mobile. Large images, slow fonts and unoptimised JavaScript are the usual culprits. Victory Digital's clients get this checked as part of every technical audit.

Mobile compatibility matters because Google uses mobile-first indexing. Your site must work on a phone screen: tap targets big enough, text readable without zooming, forms usable one-handed. The responsive web design doc at https://victory.digital/help-advice/what-is-responsive-web-design-and-why-does-it-matter covers this in more detail.

On-page SEO checklist

Every page needs a unique title tag between 50 and 60 characters and a meta description between 120 and 160 characters. These are what searchers see in the results. If they do not exist or are duplicated across pages, Google has to guess what the page is about.

Headings should follow a logical hierarchy. One H1, then H2s for main sections and H3s for sub-sections. The content under each heading should answer the question the heading promises. Thin sections (a heading followed by one sentence) are a sign the content needs strengthening.

Internal links connect your pages together and distribute authority from your strongest pages to newer ones. Every article should link to at least two or three related pages on your site. If you have a service page that converts well, link to it from your highest-traffic blog posts.

Off-page SEO checklist

Backlinks remain one of Google's strongest authority signals. Check your link profile in Google Search Console under the Links report. Look for new links (someone found you useful enough to cite) and lost links (contact the referring site if it was a genuine removal or accept the loss if it was spam). Digital PR, guest articles and data-led content are the safest ways to earn links.

Off-page also includes your Google Business Profile if you have a physical location. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent across every directory. Victory Digital's local SEO doc at https://victory.digital/help-advice/how-to-improve-your-local-seo-rankings walks through the full process.

Monitoring checklist

Rankings change week to week. Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 to track impressions, clicks and user behaviour. Victory Digital's client dashboard at https://victory.digital/client-dashboard pulls everything into one view, including Metrona AI-visibility scores that show how often your brand appears in ChatGPT and other AI engines.

Run through your full checklist once a quarter. Technical issues compound over time, content gets stale, and competitors publish new work. A quarterly review takes an afternoon and prevents small problems from turning into ranking drops.

Victory Digital offers SEO packages from GBP 980 per month that include full technical audits, content strategy, link building and ongoing reporting. Book a discovery call at https://victory.digital/book/discovery-call to see how an SEO checklist fits into a complete optimisation programme.
