What is a featured snippet and how do you win one?
A featured snippet is the answer box that appears at the top of Google results, above the first organic listing. Google picks a short answer from one page, shows it with the page title and URL, and that page takes what SEOs call position zero. Winning one is still one of the biggest visibility wins available to a small business, because the box sits above every result on the page.
The three types of featured snippet
Google chooses the format that best suits the question.
A paragraph snippet is a short written answer, usually 40 to 60 words. It answers questions like "how long does SEO take" or "what is a 301 redirect".
A list snippet shows steps or items in bullet or numbered form. How-to questions such as "how to build an internal linking strategy" tend to pull a list from a step-by-step page.
A table snippet displays data in rows and columns. Comparison queries such as "SEO vs PPC" often take a table from a page that already has one.
How Google picks the snippet
Google selects a page it trusts as the best answer, then extracts the most relevant passage. The content that wins is usually direct, well structured and matches the query's intent. There is no magic formula, but there is a repeatable pattern that improves your chances on any page.
Answer the question in the first paragraph. Google commonly lifts the opening passage into the box, so give a complete answer straight away rather than easing into it. Save the detail for the paragraphs that follow.
Mirror the question in the heading. A heading that matches how people actually search, such as "what is a featured snippet", tells Google the page answers that exact query. Question-based headings also make the page eligible for more than one query variant.
Use the format Google expects. If the query asks for steps, write numbered steps. If it asks for a comparison, include a table. Google prefers to lift content that is already formatted like the answer.
Keep the answer concise. Snippet answers are short by design. A paragraph snippet rarely pulls more than a few sentences, so write a tight summary first and expand afterwards.
Add FAQ schema. Structured data in the form of JSON-LD marks up questions and answers so search engines can read them. It is not a guarantee of a snippet, but it makes the relationship between question and answer explicit, which helps both Google and AI engines.
How snippets relate to AI search
The same patterns that win featured snippets also feed AI Overviews and AI assistants. Google's AI systems pull from pages with clear, structured answers, and the content that wins a snippet is often the content ChatGPT or Gemini cites. Metrona tracks that AI visibility for clients, showing where a site appears in AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. In effect, snippet optimisation is a practical first step towards visibility in AI search.
