What is zero-click search and how does it affect SEO?
Zero-click search is when Google answers a query directly on the results page, so the searcher never clicks through to a website. Instead of visiting a page, the person reads an AI Overview, a featured snippet or a knowledge panel and moves on. It is not a niche behaviour: the share of searches that end without a click has grown steadily as Google has packed more answers into the results themselves.
Which results are zero-click?
The main zero-click formats are:
- AI Overviews, the generated answer boxes that appear at the top of many Google results.
- Featured snippets, the short answers Google lifts from a page into position zero.
- Knowledge panels, which summarise facts about a person, business or place.
- People Also Ask boxes, which expand to show related questions and answers.
- Local packs, which show nearby businesses with ratings and directions.
All of these can satisfy a query so completely that the user has no reason to visit a website. In our own search data, queries about AI Overviews generate impressions with no clicks at all, which is exactly the pattern these answer surfaces create.
What it means for your visibility
The instinctive worry is that zero-click search steals traffic. In one sense it does, but that misses the bigger picture. Being the source of the answer is still a win. When Google or an AI assistant cites your business as the answer, people see your name at the moment they are deciding, even if they do not click that day. Brand visibility, recognition and later direct visits all flow from being the answer.
This is why the focus is shifting from chasing clicks to being cited. The pages that get lifted into AI Overviews and snippets share the same qualities: a direct answer near the top, clear headings that mirror the question, structured facts and consistent information about your business across the web. How to stay visible when clicks dry up
Treat zero-click visibility as its own goal rather than a consolation prize.
Answer the question in the first paragraph. A concise, complete answer is what both Google and AI assistants are looking for, and it is the part most likely to be quoted.
Structure for extraction. Use headings that repeat the question, short paragraphs and lists where a list is the natural format. The featured snippet guide explains the patterns that get pages lifted: https://victory.digital/help-advice/what-is-a-featured-snippet-and-how-do-you-win-one
Mark up your facts. Schema such as FAQPage and Organisation helps engines connect your content to your business entity, which matters more as answers become generated rather than ranked.
Keep your citations consistent. If your name, address and claims agree across your site, directories and listings, engines can confidently attribute the answer to you.
Track what you cannot see. Clicks only measure one kind of visibility. Metrona is the platform we use to track where a business appears in AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, so you can measure the visibility that never produces a click.
