What is on-page SEO and how do you improve it?

Cai 4 min readSearch Engine Optimisation

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself: the title tag, the headings, the copy, the internal links, the images and the structured data. Off-page SEO is your reputation elsewhere on the web, and technical SEO decides whether Google can crawl and render the page at all. On-page work sits in the middle, and for most small businesses it is where the fastest wins are.

A page that targets one clear query, answers it properly and gives Google what it needs to understand the content has a chance to rank. A page that does none of those will not be rescued by link building.

What on-page SEO covers

The factors split into four groups:

  • Content. Whether the page answers the question the searcher actually asked, and whether it goes deep enough to be worth ranking.
  • Structure. One H1, clear H2 sections, a logical order and short paragraphs that are easy to scan on a phone.
  • Metadata. The title tag and meta description that show in the results, written to earn the click rather than to repeat a keyword.
  • Links and media. Internal links that pass authority around your site, descriptive alt text on images and a page weight that keeps loading times reasonable.

Structured data belongs here too, because the code sits in your HTML, though its effect shows up in how your result is displayed rather than where it ranks. Speed is part technical, part on-page, depending on how the page was built.

The elements that matter most

The title tag is the strongest on-page signal you control. Keep it around 50 to 60 characters so it displays in full, put the target query near the start and write it so a person wants to click. The meta description does not rank a page on its own, but it decides whether someone picks your result over the one below, so treat it as 120 to 160 characters of advertising.

Your headings carry the structure. One H1 states the topic, then each H2 covers one part of it. If a reader can follow the page from the headings alone, Google can too. Our explainer on ranking factors at https://victory.digital/what-are-the-most-important-seo-ranking-factors covers where on-page signals sit alongside links and page experience.

Internal links are the most underused on-page tool. Every page should link out to the pages that matter most to the business, with anchor text that describes the destination. Our internal linking guide at https://victory.digital/how-to-build-an-internal-linking-strategy explains how to map that out.

How to improve on-page SEO

  • Start with one query per page. A page chasing SEO services, SEO for plumbers and local SEO packages at once will rank for none of them. Match each page to a single intent, the first step in our guide to keyword research at https://victory.digital/how-to-do-keyword-research-for-seo.
  • Rewrite the title tag and meta description first. These are quick edits with an immediate effect on click-through rate, and the change shows up in Search Console in weeks.
  • Answer the question in the opening paragraph. Someone searching for a definition wants the definition, not three paragraphs of scene setting.
  • Break the page into H2 sections. One idea per section, one clear heading each, so readers and Google can follow the structure.
  • Add internal links, to the pages that need authority and back from your most popular pages. The landing page guide at https://victory.digital/how-to-optimise-a-landing-page-for-seo applies the same thinking to a single conversion page.
  • Fix your images. Descriptive file names and alt text, compressed files and sensible dimensions. Images are often the biggest cause of a slow page.
  • Add structured data where it applies. Article, FAQPage and Organisation schema help search engines and AI assistants read the page accurately.
