How to optimise your YouTube videos for search (YouTube SEO)

YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world. More people search on YouTube than on Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and every other platform combined, and Google frequently surfaces YouTube videos in its own search results too. If you publish video content for your business, you need those videos to appear when potential customers search for what you do. That is where YouTube SEO comes in.

YouTube SEO is the practice of optimising your video titles, descriptions, tags, thumbnails and captions so the platform's algorithm understands what your content is about and shows it to the right audience. This guide covers the practical steps you can take on every video you publish.

Why YouTube SEO matters for your business

YouTube's algorithm weighs watch time, session duration and click-through rate heavily. A well-optimised video that keeps people watching will rank higher than a poorly-titled one that people skip. The same optimisation also helps your videos appear in Google search results. Google often shows video thumbnails for how-to queries, product reviews and tutorials, so a strong YouTube SEO strategy feeds visibility on both platforms at once.

The title is the single most important SEO element for any video. It appears in YouTube search results, Google search results and suggested video panels. A good title includes the primary keyword near the start, communicates a clear benefit and creates a reason to click.

Keep titles under 60 characters so they do not get cut off. Write the way your audience searches. If you are a plumbing business showing how to fix a leaking tap, title the video "How to fix a leaking tap" rather than "Tap repair demonstration video". The first matches what people type; the second does not.

Avoid clickbait. YouTube's algorithm detects when watch time does not match the title promise and demotes those videos. An honest title that the content delivers on is the safest route to long-term rankings.

Descriptions that earn clicks

The first two or three lines of your description appear above the "Show more" fold. Put the most important information there: what the video covers, who it is for and a clear call to action. Include your target keyword naturally in the first sentence.

Below the fold, add timestamps for each section. YouTube treats these as chapters and shows them in search results, which helps viewers skip to the part they need. Add a link to your website, links to related videos on your channel and a straightforward next step such as "Visit our website to book a free consultation."

Tags, thumbnails and captions

Tags help YouTube understand your video topic. Use the tags that describe your content, format and audience accurately. Do not stuff unrelated high-traffic tags; YouTube treats that as spam and can penalise the video.

Thumbnails are the second-biggest factor in click-through rate after the title. A custom thumbnail showing a clear face or an intriguing still frame outperforms auto-generated frames by a wide margin. Use high contrast, readable text and consistent branding so viewers recognise your channel.

Captions and transcripts give YouTube much more text to work with. Uploading a transcript or correcting YouTube's auto-captions helps the algorithm understand spoken terms that do not appear in your title or description. This alone can lift your video for long-tail keyword searches.
