What are Core Web Vitals and why do they matter?

Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to judge how fast and stable your website feels to visitors: loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability. They have been a ranking factor since 2021, and getting them right is one of the quickest technical wins available to most websites. If a page takes too long to load, reacts slowly to clicks or jumps around as it draws, it ranks lower and loses visitors.

The three metrics explained

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures loading speed. It records how long the main content of a page takes to appear, and Google considers 2.5 seconds or less to be good. When people say a website feels slow, LCP is usually the metric behind it.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness. It tracks how quickly a page reacts when a visitor clicks, taps or types. Google's target is 200 milliseconds or less. INP replaced the older First Input Delay metric in 2024 because it gives a fuller picture of how responsive a page feels throughout a whole visit, not just on the first click.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability. It scores how much a page moves around as it loads, and 0.1 or less is considered good. A high CLS score is what happens when text jumps down the page just as you are about to click a button, usually because images or adverts have not been given space to sit in.

Why they matter for rankings

Google's aim is to rank pages people enjoy using, and a page that is slow and jumpy is a poor experience on any device. Core Web Vitals sit inside Google's wider page experience signals, alongside mobile friendliness and safe browsing. They are not the whole story: a fast page with thin content will still lose to a slower page with better answers. But when everything else is close, speed and stability are often the deciding factor.

They matter commercially as well. A slow page costs you visitors before they ever see your offer. Shaving a second off the load time of a page you already rank for usually lifts both your conversions and, over time, your position.

How to check your scores

Google Search Console has a Core Web Vitals report that shows which of your pages are failing and why. For a single page, PageSpeed Insights gives a lab score and a field score, with the exact causes listed. How we fix them

Most fixes are mechanical: compressing images, removing render-blocking code, giving images and videos fixed dimensions, and improving server response times. Some need judgement, such as deciding which third-party scripts are worth the load they add.
