What is structured data and why does it matter for SEO?
Structured data is a standardised way to tell search engines what your content actually means. You add extra code to your page that labels things like reviews, prices, events and FAQs so Google can understand them, display them as rich results and cite them in AI answers.
Think of it this way. Without structured data, Google reads your page as paragraphs of text. With structured data, you are handing it a labelled card that says "this is a recipe with a 4.5-star rating and a cooking time of 30 minutes." That extra clarity is what powers rich results and helps your content appear in AI Overviews.
What structured data looks like
Structured data is code you add to your HTML, usually in the format called JSON-LD. You place a block of JSON inside a <script> tag in your page's <head> or <body>. It looks something like this:
<script type="application/ld+json"> { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Article", "headline": "What is Structured Data", "description": "A standardised way to label content for search engines." } </script>
The three parts are the @context (which tells Google you are using Schema.org), the @type (what kind of thing this is) and the properties that describe it. Google supports hundreds of schema types including Product, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, Review, Event, Article and Organisation.
Why structured data matters for SEO
Structured data is not a direct ranking factor, but it is a proven way to win rich results. Pages with FAQ schema get featured directly in search results. Recipe schema shows star ratings and cook times. LocalBusiness schema helps you appear in the Local Pack and Knowledge Panel.
Rich results attract more attention and a higher click-through rate. When your listing includes a star rating, price range and availability, searchers see your result before they even read the blue link. That extra visibility compounds over time.
Structured data also matters for AI search. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini all pull information from structured data when constructing their answers. A page with well-structured FAQ schema is far more likely to be cited as the source for a question. Metrona tracks how often your content appears in AI answers, and structured data is one of the signals it measures.
How to add structured data to your site
You have two options. The simplest is to add JSON-LD manually to your page template. Most content management systems let you paste a block into the <head> section or use a plugin.
For WordPress sites, plugins like Yoast SEO and Rank Math generate structured data automatically for articles, products and FAQs. For custom-built sites, you can write the JSON-LD by hand.

Common types of structured data small businesses should use
Organisation schema - your business name, logo and contact details. This helps Google display a Knowledge Panel when someone searches for your brand.
LocalBusiness schema - your address, phone number, opening hours and service area. Essential for any local business that wants to appear in the Local Pack.
Product schema - price, availability, ratings and reviews. Critical for ecommerce stores and service pages with pricing.
FAQPage schema - question-and-answer pairs. One of the most effective schema types for winning featured snippets and AI citations.
Review schema - star ratings for your products, services or articles. Helps your listings stand out in search results.
