How to get started with SEO: a step-by-step guide for small businesses

SEO is not a single task. It is a process, and for a small business owner doing it for the first time it can feel like everyone expects you to know the steps already. This guide lays out the five steps we take every client through, in the order we take them, so you know where to start and what to do next.

Step 1: Run an audit of your current website

Before you change anything, find out what Google already sees when it looks at your site. An audit checks the technical foundations: whether your pages load quickly, work on mobile, have clear titles and descriptions, and are actually being indexed. Our free SEO report covers these basics and flags the fixes that matter most. Run it once, write down the issues, and fix the ones that stop Google from understanding your pages first. You can start that report at https://victory.digital/run-a-seo-report.

Step 2: Research the keywords your customers use

Keyword research is how you find out what people actually type into Google when they look for what you sell. Start with the obvious terms, then widen out to questions and long-tail phrases. A plumber in Barnstaple, for example, gets more value from ranking for "emergency boiler repair Barnstaple" than from trying to beat national sites on "plumber". Our guide to keyword research walks through the whole method, including how to judge which terms are winnable for a smaller site: https://victory.digital/how-to-do-keyword-research-for-seo.

Step 3: Optimise the pages you already have

On-page SEO is the work you do on each page to help Google understand what it is about. That means one clear topic per page, a title tag that includes your target keyword, a meta description that earns the click, headings that structure the content, and fast, mobile-friendly pages. Do not try to rank one page for ten different things. Pick the strongest page for each keyword and make it the obvious answer. The full on-page checklist is here: https://victory.digital/what-is-on-page-seo-and-how-do-you-improve-it.

Step 4: Publish content that answers real questions

Search engines rank pages that help people, so the content you publish should answer the questions your customers actually ask. Blog posts, FAQs and guides all work, provided they are written for the reader first and the search engine second. One genuinely useful article a month is more valuable than five rushed ones. This is where most small businesses start to feel the earlier steps paying off, because every new page is another chance to appear in search results.

Links from other websites tell Google that your content is worth recommending. The safe, sustainable way to earn them is by creating content people want to reference and building relationships, not buying links. Our guide to earning backlinks covers the realistic options: https://victory.digital/how-to-earn-backlinks-without-paying-for-them. Alongside that, track what changes. Rank tracking shows you which pages are moving and which are stuck, so you know where to focus next: https://victory.digital/how-to-track-your-seo-rankings.

How long before you see results?

SEO is a compounding channel, not a quick fix. Most clients start to see meaningful movement between three and six months, which is why our SEO packages run on 3, 3, 6 and 6 month terms. The honest expectation to set is that the first few months build the foundations and results accelerate after that. Consistent work over time is what produces numbers like TrustATrader's 400% growth in organic traffic, and that campaign did not come from a single push.

Where to go from here

If the five steps above feel like a lot to take on alone, this is exactly what we do for clients every day. Our SEO packages start at GBP 980 per month for 15 hours of dedicated work, up to GBP 3,920 per month for 75 hours, and every campaign begins with the same audit, then research, then optimisation sequence. See the packages and pricing at https://victory.digital/seo-packages.
