What is Google Gemini and how does it differ from ChatGPT?

Google Gemini is Google's AI assistant. Like ChatGPT, it can write, analyse, research and generate images. But where Gemini stands apart is its deep integration with Google's products and its ability to generate video and music. For small business owners trying to decide which AI assistant to use, the choice is less about raw capability and more about which ecosystem you already live in.

What Google Gemini is

Gemini is built by Google and runs on the Gemini family of models (currently Gemini 3.1 Pro as the flagship). It is multimodal from day one, meaning it was designed to handle text, images, audio, video and code in a single model, rather than adding those abilities one at a time.

You can access Gemini through the web at gemini.google.com, through the mobile app, and directly inside Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets and YouTube. It can search the web, read your uploaded files, generate images, create videos with Google Veo 3 and compose short songs with Lyria 3 Pro.

How Gemini differs from ChatGPT

The biggest difference is ecosystem. Gemini is part of Google. It can pull information from your Gmail, Google Drive, Google Maps and YouTube in a single conversation. If you run your business on Google Workspace, Gemini can draft emails from a prompt, summarise a spreadsheet or create a slide deck without you switching tabs.

ChatGPT has a broader third-party ecosystem. It connects to Microsoft products (SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams) and over 140 business apps including GitHub, HubSpot and Slack. OpenAI's agentic tools, such as ChatGPT Agent and Codex, are more mature than Google's equivalent.

In creative output, Gemini has a clear edge on video and music. ChatGPT discontinued its video generator in early 2026, while Google's Veo 3 ranks at the top of text-to-video leaderboards. Gemini also generates music through Lyria 3 Pro, which ChatGPT cannot do. For still images, both are excellent and roughly neck and neck.

Pricing is another difference. Gemini's free tier is generous, and its paid plans start at GBP 5.50 a month (Google AI Plus). The top-tier Ultra plan costs around GBP 200 a month. ChatGPT's free tier is more restricted. Its Plus plan costs GBP 16 a month, and the Pro plan costs from GBP 80 a month.

What this means for your business

Both Gemini and ChatGPT are being used by customers to find and evaluate businesses. When someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, the businesses it names get the enquiry. That is why being visible in AI search matters.

Metrona, Victory Digital's in-house platform, tracks your business's visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI assistants. It shows which queries mention your brand and where you appear in AI-generated answers.

The practices that help you get cited by AI assistants are the same whether a user is on ChatGPT or Gemini. Clear entity information, consistent business details across the web, structured data, and quotable answers to common questions. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the discipline of making your business citeable by all AI engines, not just one.
