How to write a meta title and meta description that get clicks

Cai 3 min readSearch Engine Optimisation

Meta titles and meta descriptions are the first thing a searcher sees about your page. They decide whether someone clicks your result or the one below it. Getting them right is one of the fastest SEO wins for any small business website.

A meta title is the clickable headline shown in search results. It tells Google and the searcher what the page is about. Keep yours between 50 and 60 characters so it displays in full on desktop and mobile. Put your target keyword towards the front, and write it so a person wants to click. A title that repeats the keyword without adding context is a missed opportunity.

The meta description is the short summary underneath the title. It does not directly affect rankings, but it has a huge effect on click-through rate. Write 120 to 160 characters that expand on the title, answer the searcher's question and include a reason to click. Treat every description as a tiny piece of advertising for your page.

The rules apply to both

Start with the search intent. Is the searcher looking for an answer, a product or a specific site? Your meta data has to match that intent for the click to happen. If someone searches "how to fix a leaking tap" and your title says "plumber in Birmingham", they will scroll right past.

Put the primary keyword in the title and the description. Not crammed in, but naturally. Google holds matching terms in search results, and that visual signal draws the eye.

Make each page's meta data unique. Duplicate title tags across your site confuse Google and waste a chance to differentiate your pages. Every page competes for a different query. The meta data should reflect that.

Add a subtle call to action where it fits. "Learn how to get started", "Compare the options" or "Read the full guide" can lift CTR by giving the searcher a reason to click instead of moving on to the next result.

Common mistakes to avoid

Keyword stuffing does not help Google rank you. It makes you look like a spam result and hurts your click-through rate.

Letting Google write the description. When it cannot find a good meta description, Google sometimes pulls text from the page body or shows random content. Write your own description so you decide what the searcher sees.

Copying the H1 as your meta title. The title tag and the H1 serve different audiences. The title tag sells the result in search results. The H1 states the topic on the page itself. They can be similar, but they should not be identical.

Writing the same meta title for every service page. If every page on your site says "SEO Services | Your Business Name", none of them tells Google what makes them different. Every page needs its own unique, descriptive title.

Ignoring mobile display. Google now indexes the mobile version of pages. A 58-character title that fits on desktop might be cut short on a phone. Stick to the shorter end of the range for mobile-friendly meta titles.

How to check your meta data

Your free Victory Digital SEO report at https://victory.digital/run-a-seo-report scans every page of your site and flags missing or duplicate meta titles and descriptions, as well as title tags that are too long. It is a fast way to see where your site is losing clicks.

Victory Digital's paid SEO packages start at GBP 980 per month and include content briefs that specify the title and description for every article. The briefs match each page to its target query and give you a title and description optimised for that keyword.

The meta title and meta description are two lines on each page that earn more clicks than any amount of on-page polishing if the headline does not work. Write them with the searcher in mind, keep them unique and check that every page has its own.
