How to use Google Search Console to find SEO opportunities

Cai 3 min read 1 viewsSearch Engine Optimisation

Google Search Console is free, and it is one of the fastest ways to find SEO opportunities for your website. It shows you the exact queries people used to find you, how often you appeared for each one, and where you ranked. Most site owners open it, glance at the total clicks, and close it again. The real value is in the gaps: queries with impressions but no clicks, and pages sitting just below the first page.

Why impressions without clicks matter

A query that shows your site on Google but gets no clicks is not a failure. It is an opportunity. Google is already willing to show you for that phrase, which means your page is relevant enough. The problem is usually your position, your title and meta description, or the page itself, and each of those can be fixed.

Start with the performance report

Open Search Console and go to Performance. Set the date range to the last six months so you are working with a decent sample. The report has four tabs: queries, pages, countries, and devices. Start with queries, because that is where the opportunities hide.

Sort by impressions and look for terms with a high impression count and a click-through rate below one per cent. These are queries where Google shows you but almost nobody clicks. For each one, ask why. Is the page ranking on page two or three, just out of reach? Does the title promise something the page does not deliver? Is a stronger page on the same site competing for the same query? Our guide to what an impression means and how to rank higher on Google explains the basics before you work through the data. Read it at https://victory.digital/help-advice/what-does-an-impression-mean/ and https://victory.digital/help-advice/how-do-i-rank-higher-on-google/.

Spot pages that are close to ranking

Sort the same report by position instead. Anything sitting between positions eight and twenty is close to the first page, and small improvements often push it over the line. That could mean adding a section to the page, improving the title and meta description, or strengthening the internal links pointing at it. On our own site, queries mentioning Google Search Console collect impressions in the low hundreds with almost no clicks, and the only covering page sits at position 26 with a click-through rate of 0.18 per cent. That is exactly the kind of gap a focused article can close.

Check what Google has indexed

The Pages report tells you which of your pages Google has indexed and which it has not. Pages that are not indexed get no traffic at all, however well they are written. Look for pages that are crawling fine but not being indexed, and consider whether they need better content, clearer internal links, or a request for indexing once they are fixed. Watch the queries you are losing

Search Console does not show you rankings you lost before you had the tool, but it does show trends over time. Comparing two date ranges in the performance report reveals terms where your clicks have slipped. A decline is often the first sign of a competitor, a stale page, or a Google update, and catching it early makes it far easier to fix.

Tie it to your other reporting

Search Console gives you raw data, but it does not track your rankings over time or across your chosen keywords automatically. Our client dashboard does that, showing the rankings you care about alongside your search visibility. See it at https://victory.digital/client-dashboard.
