How to use schema markup to get found in ChatGPT and AI search
Schema markup is a standard way of describing a web page to machines, and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity use it when they decide which sources to cite. If your page carries the right structured data, an assistant can see what you are, what you sell and which questions you answer without having to guess. This guide covers the schema types that matter for AI search and how to apply them.
Search engines have read schema for years. Google uses it to build rich results such as FAQ dropdowns and product stars, and the same signals now feed AI assistants. When a person asks ChatGPT a question, the assistant looks for machine-readable descriptions of a page, not just its prose. Structured data is how you supply those descriptions.
Which schema types AI engines read
You do not need every schema type. These four cover most business sites and are the ones assistants and search engines both understand:
- Article schema marks blog posts and news pages with a title, author and publish date.
- FAQ schema lists the questions a page answers, in the exact question and answer format assistants like to quote.
- Organisation schema (Organization in the code) states your business name, logo and contact details.
- Product schema describes what you sell: name, price, availability and reviews.
Each of these is written in JSON-LD, a small block of code you can add to a page yourself. WordPress plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math can generate the markup for you, and on a custom build your developer can paste the block in directly.
Match the schema to the content
The key rule is that schema must describe what the page actually contains. A page that asks a question in its heading and answers it in the next paragraph suits FAQ schema. An article with a named author and date suits Article schema. Markup that does not match the page confuses Google and the assistants, and can be treated as an attempt to manipulate results, so keep the two aligned.
Why schema helps you get cited
AI assistants favour sources that answer a question directly and can be quoted without distortion. FAQ schema makes that easy: the assistant lifts the question and answer straight from the markup instead of parsing your prose. Product schema hands over the price and availability facts needed for shopping answers. In both cases the assistant can cite you with confidence, which is the point of appearing in AI search at all.
