What is domain authority and why does it matter for SEO?
Domain authority is a metric that predicts how well a website is likely to rank in search engine results. It was developed by Moz and runs from 1 to 100: the higher the score, the stronger the site's likely ranking power. This article explains what domain authority actually measures, how it is calculated and whether you should spend time trying to improve it.
What domain authority measures
Domain authority is not a Google metric. It is a proprietary score calculated by Moz using dozens of factors, the most important of which is the number and quality of backlinks pointing to a domain. A site with links from many trusted, relevant sources will score higher than one with few links or links from low-quality directories. The score uses a machine learning model trained against real search engine results, so it correlates reasonably well with how Google actually treats a site. But correlation is not the same as causation: a high domain authority score is a sign of a strong backlink profile, not a direct ranking factor itself.
Domain authority reflects the strength of your entire domain, not a single page. That means every page on your site inherits some of the authority from the pages that attract the best links, and publishing new content on a domain with a solid authority score gives that content a built-in advantage. Our link building guide covers the methods that help earn the kind of quality links that build genuine authority over time: https://victory.digital/help-advice/what-is-link-building-and-why-does-it-matter-for-seo/
How to check your domain authority
You can check any site's domain authority using Moz's free Link Explorer tool or through paid SEO platforms like Moz Pro, Ahrefs and Semrush, each of which offers their own version of the metric (Ahrefs calls theirs Domain Rating). The figure will differ between tools because each uses its own calculation, but the general shape should be similar. For a more practical starting point, our free SEO report at https://victory.digital/run-a-seo-report/ checks your website's technical health, content quality and on-page optimisation, all of which feed into how search engines see your site.
What domain authority is not
Domain authority is not the same thing as Google's own trust signals. Google uses its own systems, including E-E-A-T, topical authority and link quality analysis, to decide which pages rank. A high domain authority cannot fix a page with poor content, slow load times or a bad mobile experience. Nor is it a fixed number: Moz updates its scores regularly, so a score can rise or fall as your link profile changes and as Moz refines its calculation. A reasonable target for a small business website is a score in the 30-50 range, but obsessing over the number is less useful than doing the things that increase it naturally.
Your focus should be on earning real links from real sources, publishing content that answers what people search for and keeping your site technically sound. The score follows those inputs, not the other way round.
How to build domain authority over time
Building genuine domain authority takes consistent effort. The methods that work are the ones that would strengthen any website: create content worth linking to, earn coverage in relevant publications, maintain a clean technical setup and make sure your internal linking passes authority around your site. Our SEO packages start at GBP 980 per month and include the link building, content strategy and technical work that build the kind of profile search engines trust: https://victory.digital/seo-packages/
Case studies from our clients show what that looks like in practice. TrustATrader grew organic traffic by 400% through a sustained content and link building programme. Home Instead saw a 251% increase in organic traffic alongside a 3,446% increase in paid ad conversions. Those results come from the fundamentals: good content, good links and good technical health. Domain authority is one way to track progress, but it is the inputs that matter.
