TikTok is a social media app used for the sharing of videos up to 60 seconds. Many compare the app to the popular app Vine (closed down in 2017) which allowed users to post 6 second comedy videos. TikToks often use popular and catchy songs in the backgrounds of videos which has allowed many songs to reach chart success such as Doja Cat’s ‘Say So’.
As well as this, users can live stream allowing a closer interaction between TikTokers and their fans – these live streams are also a way of ‘gifting’ these TikTokers (users will purchase ‘gifts’ and give them to the streamer allowing them to make monetary gain through the app). Famous TikTokers include Charli Damelio, Noen Eubanks and Abby Roberts. Although innocent at the surface, TikTok hasn’t come around without its fair share of controversy due to its limited censoring of what could be described as dangerous content depicting the use of drugs and sexual content.
