Social media marketing refers to a form of advertising used by companies in the modern day of advertisements. Companies will often pay social media companies to advertise a product or service of theirs to a target demographic/psychographic using business features on each site. An example of this is a feminine hygiene products company paying Instagram to target their ads towards women between the age of 16-24. This is a more effective way of marketing than traditional TV or billboard marketing due to the fact that the ads are concentrated to a target audience rather than anyone who happens to see a commercial advertisement on a billboard or TV.
