What is conversion rate optimisation (CRO) and how do you get started?
Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) is the practice of increasing the percentage of website visitors who take a desired action. That action might be filling in a contact form, booking a discovery call or making a purchase. CRO does not need more traffic. It gets more value from the traffic you already have.
If you have 1,000 visitors a month and 10 of them enquire, your conversion rate is 1%. If you can move that to 2%, you have doubled your enquiries without spending a penny on ads or SEO.
### The difference between CRO and SEO
SEO brings people to your site. CRO helps them act when they arrive. The two work together. A site that ranks well but converts poorly wastes its ranking. A site that converts well but has no traffic needs traffic before CRO pays off.
Victory Digital's SEO packages start from GBP 980 per month (15 hours) and go up to GBP 3,920 per month (75 hours). That investment pays for itself when the same percentage of visitors starts converting at a higher rate.
### The three levers of CRO
CRO comes down to three things you can improve.
**Clarity of message.** A visitor should know what you offer and what to do next within three seconds of landing on your page. If your headline is vague or your CTA button is buried, people leave. Try this: show your homepage to someone who has never seen it and ask them what you do. If they cannot answer confidently, your message is not clear enough.
**Trust signals.** People do not buy from businesses they do not trust. Reviews, case studies with real numbers, logos of clients you have worked with and clear contact details all build trust. Victory Digital publishes verified case study results: Home Instead saw a +251% increase in organic traffic and +3,446% increase in ad conversions. TrustATrader saw +400% organic growth. Numbers like those prove the service works.
**The path to action.** Every page on your site should lead somewhere. A blog post about SEO should link to the SEO packages page or the free SEO report at https://victory.digital/run-a-seo-report. A case study should link to a discovery call booking page. If a page has no next step, it is a dead end.
### How to run your first CRO test
You do not need expensive tools to start with CRO. Pick one page on your site that gets traffic but does not convert well. This might be a service page with a low enquiry rate or a blog post that ranks well but has no CTA.
Change one thing at a time. If you change the headline, the button colour and the page layout all at once, you will not know which change made the difference.
Run the change for at least two weeks or until you have 100 visitors on the new version, whichever comes later. Compare the conversion rate against the old version.
A 10% to 15% improvement on a single page is a strong result. Compound that across your whole site and the effect on enquiries is significant.
### Where CRO fits in a content strategy
CRO is not a one-off fix. It is a continuous process of testing and improving. Every new piece of content you publish is an opportunity to test a CTA, a headline or a layout. The pages that perform best become templates for the next ones.
