What are paid, owned and earned media?
Every marketing channel your business uses falls into one of three categories: paid, owned or earned. Marketing professionals call this the POEM framework. Understanding which category each channel sits in helps you spend your budget where it works hardest and measure what you are getting back.
Paid media is any marketing channel you pay to use. Google Ads, Facebook and Instagram adverts, LinkedIn sponsored content, display banners, paid influencer posts, sponsored content on industry websites and traditional advertising like print and radio all count as paid media. The major advantage of paid media is speed and control. You choose the audience, the budget and the message, and you can see results the same day. The trade-off is that visibility stops the moment you stop paying. There is no lasting asset at the end of a paid campaign beyond the data it generates.
Owned media is any channel your business controls directly. Your website, your blog, your email newsletter, your social media profiles, your mobile app and your printed marketing materials all sit in this category. You decide what to publish, when to publish it and how it looks. The cost of owned media is much lower than paid media because you are not renting access to someone else's audience. The trade-off is reach and speed. Building a website audience or growing an email list takes months or years of consistent effort. Owned media compounds over time but rarely delivers instant results.
Earned media is exposure your business receives without directly paying for it. Customer reviews on Google and Trustpilot, press coverage in local or industry publications, backlinks from other websites, social media shares, word-of-mouth recommendations and user-generated content all count as earned media. It is the hardest category to generate because you do not control it. You cannot buy a five-star review or guarantee a journalist will cover your story. But earned media carries more weight than either paid or owned media. People trust a friend's recommendation or a mention in a respected publication more than any advert you can write.
How paid, owned and earned media work together
The POEM framework is most useful when you treat the three categories as a connected system rather than three separate strategies. A typical marketing cycle works like this: you create owned content for your website or blog, promote it through paid media such as Google Ads or Facebook ads, and that combination generates earned media such as social shares, backlinks and customer reviews. Each category feeds the next.
A small business with a limited budget might focus on owned and earned media first. Creating consistent blog content, building an email list and asking happy customers for reviews costs little more than time. As the business grows and revenue increases, paid media becomes the accelerator that gets the owned content in front of more people faster.
Victory Digital uses the POEM approach with every client. We build owned content on their website, promote it through paid search and social campaigns, and build the authority and trust that generates earned mentions, backlinks and reviews. The results are measurable. TrustATrader saw a 400% increase in organic traffic. Home Instead Basingstoke grew organic traffic by 251% and ad conversions by 3,446%.
