How to write effective website copy for your small business

Cai 4 min readContent Marketing

Your website copy is the voice of your business online. It is what tells visitors who you are, what you offer, and why they should choose you. Good website copy does not just describe your services. It speaks directly to the problems your customers have and shows them how you solve those problems.

This guide covers how to write website copy that works, whether you are writing it yourself or briefing a professional. These principles apply to your homepage, your about page, your services page, and every other page that represents your business.

## Start with your customer, not yourself

The most common mistake in website copy is leading with what the business does rather than what the customer needs. Visitors arrive asking a single question: can you help me? If the first paragraph talks about your company history or your awards before addressing that question, you have already lost them.

Instead, open by naming the problem your customer faces. A heating engineer's homepage could start with 'A broken boiler in winter is a genuine emergency. We fix it fast, and we give you a fixed price before we start.' That answers the question, addresses the worry, and builds trust all at once.

This approach works for every business type. Home Instead Basingstoke partnered with Victory Digital to rewrite their website copy around customer needs rather than services. The result was a 251% increase in organic traffic and a 3,446% increase in ad conversions. Leading with the customer's problem is not just better for readability. It drives real results.

## Write one clear message per page

Every page on your website should do one job. The homepage should answer 'what does this business do and who is it for?' The about page should answer 'why should I trust them?' Each services page should answer 'what exactly is this service and does it solve my problem?'

When a page tries to do everything, it ends up doing nothing well. Strip back each page to its single purpose and cut anything that does not serve it. A landscaping services page should not spend three paragraphs explaining the company history. That information belongs on the about page, where the visitor is ready for it.

## Use plain English and short sentences

Small business website visitors are not literary critics. They are busy people looking for a solution. Use short sentences, plain words, and active verbs. Say what you do, how much it costs if you can, and what happens next.

'We design and build patios in Exeter. A standard 20-square-metre patio costs GBP 3,500 to GBP 5,500 including materials and labour. We start within two weeks of the deposit. Get a free quote today.'

That is clear, specific, and actionable. It answers price, timeline, and next steps in four short lines. Compare it with 'We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional outdoor living spaces tailored to your unique requirements.' The second version says nothing concrete.

TrustATrader applied this principle across their content programme and saw a 400% increase in organic traffic. Clear, direct, helpful copy outperforms vague marketing language every time.

## Include a clear call to action

Every page should tell the visitor what to do next. Do not assume they will work it out. If they are on your about page and they feel ready to buy, give them a link to your contact page or your services. If you want them to book a call, say so.

Victory Digital's own service pages use this structure throughout. Each one finishes with a relevant next step, whether that is running a free SEO report or booking a discovery call. Your website should do the same.

## Read it aloud before you publish

This is the fastest quality check you can run. Read your copy out loud exactly as it is written. If you trip over a sentence, cut words until it flows. If something sounds unnatural, rewrite it. If you would not say it to a customer standing in front of you, do not put it on your website.
