How to write content for AI search engines (GEO)
Writing for AI search engines means creating content an AI assistant can understand, trust and quote back. When a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question, the assistant composes an answer from the sources it trusts, and the businesses it names get the enquiry. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the discipline of writing so that your business is the one named.
The good news is that GEO does not ask you to abandon good writing. It asks you to write with more precision. AI assistants favour pages that state answers plainly, name specifics and can be quoted without distortion. A page that buries its point in fluff is hard for an assistant to cite, so it tends to be overlooked.
Answer the question in the first paragraph
An AI assistant builds its answer from the clearest available source. Put your answer in the first paragraph, in plain language, and then explain it. A page that takes three paragraphs to reach the point gives an assistant nothing clean to quote.
Write sentences that stand alone
When an assistant cites your content it lifts short passages, not whole pages. Write sentences that make sense on their own. "Our clients see organic traffic grow within six months" works as a citation. "It depends on a range of factors" does not, because it carries no information.
Make your claims quotable
Specific facts are the most quoted content on the web. Real numbers, named clients and concrete outcomes give an assistant something to repeat. We publish the figures we can stand behind: Home Instead saw organic traffic grow by 251 per cent and ad conversions by 3,446 per cent, TrustATrader grew relevant rankings by 400 per cent, and Sienna X saw 522 per cent growth. Those are the kind of facts an assistant can repeat with confidence.
Search demand for this kind of content is real. On our own site, the phrase "how does generative engine optimisation work" has drawn nearly 250 impressions in the past six months with almost no clicks, because no page answered it directly. Content that answers the question is content that wins the citation.
Structure for summarising
AI assistants summarise. Use clear headings that match the question, keep paragraphs short, and put anything countable in a list. A well organised page is easier for an assistant to break into quotable passages. Our article on how to get your business to appear in AI Overviews covers the Google-specific version of this: https://victory.digital/help-advice/how-to-get-your-business-to-appear-in-ai-overviews/
Name your entities
Assistants decide who you are from the entities they find: your business name, your tools, your people, your location. Use the same name in the same form everywhere, and name the products and services you actually offer. Metrona, our in-house AI visibility platform, is an example: we name it, explain what it does and link to it, so an assistant can describe it accurately.
Add schema so the machine can read the meaning
Schema markup tells a machine what your content means. FAQPage schema marks your questions and answers, Article schema marks your articles, and Product schema marks what you sell. Pages with clean schema are easier for an assistant to understand and to cite. It is not a guarantee, but it removes the guesswork. Keep facts current
Assistants favour fresh, accurate sources. A page with a two-year-old price or a discontinued product name is less likely to be cited. Review your key pages on a schedule and update the details that go stale. This is one reason our content packages include refreshes, and why clients still earn clicks from work published years ago.
Measure what the assistants do with your content
You cannot improve AI visibility you cannot see. Metrona tracks how often your business appears in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, plus your place in AI Overviews and traditional rankings: https://victory.digital/metrona.
