What is a buyer persona and how do you create one?

Cai 3 min readContent Marketing

A buyer persona is a detailed, semi-fictional profile of your ideal customer, built from real market research. Instead of writing for "everyone" and reaching no one, a persona helps you craft content, ads and offers that speak directly to the people most likely to buy.

Good buyer personas go well beyond demographics. They capture goals, objections, daily pain points and the questions someone types into Google before they pick up the phone.

Why buyer personas matter for marketing

When you know who you are writing for, every marketing decision gets easier. The SEO team can target the keywords that persona actually searches for. The content team can answer the questions that keep that persona up at night. The PPC team can write ad copy that lands because it matches the searcher's intent.

Without personas, marketing becomes generic. A blog post optimised for "digital marketing agency Devon" may rank but fail to convert, because the person reading it reads it as "marketing for someone else" rather than "marketing for my exact situation."

How to create a buyer persona in five steps

Step 1: Talk to real customers

Interview or survey your existing customers. Ask about their job, their goals, the problem that made them look for a solution and why they chose you over competitors. If you have a client dashboard with analytics, look for patterns in who converts.

Step 2: Build the profile

Give the persona a name, a job title and a short backstory. "Digital Marketing Manager Dave, aged 34, works for a 40-person accountancy firm in Exeter. His director wants more leads from the website, but Dave has limited SEO budget and no prior agency experience. He manages the firm's WordPress site himself and spends his Fridays writing blog posts that never seem to rank."

A good persona also notes where this person spends their time online, which search terms they use and what triggers them to seek outside help.

Step 3: Add their goals and pain points

What does Dave want? More organic traffic and a clear SEO strategy his director will sign off. What stops him? Past agency experiences where he felt locked into contracts with no transparency, and a director who wants to see ROI before spending more.

Step 4: Map the buying journey

How does Dave find a solution? He searches Google for "SEO for accountancy firms" and "how much does SEO cost in the UK." He reads comparison guides. He looks at pricing pages and case studies. He needs to see a free SEO report before he will book a call.

Step 5: Apply the persona to your content

Now every piece of content gets tested against the persona. Does this article answer a question Dave is searching for? Would this ad copy make Dave click? Does this pricing page give Dave the transparency his director demands?
