What is a brand audit and how do you run one?

Cai 3 min readContent Marketing

A brand audit is a check-up that tells you whether your brand is working. It looks at your visual identity, your messaging, your place in the market and how customers actually see you. If your brand voice, logo and website do not say the same thing, an audit will surface the gaps so you can fix them.

Why do a brand audit?

Your brand is not just your logo. It is your tone of voice, your colour palette, your customer service and the feeling someone gets when they visit your website or walk into your business. Over time, brands drift. A tagline that made sense five years ago may no longer fit. A logo that looked modern in 2020 can feel dated in 2026. A brand audit catches this drift before it damages trust.

Businesses that refresh their brand based on an audit see measurable results. Victory Digital helped TrustATrader achieve a 400% increase in organic traffic after a full brand and content review. Home Instead saw a 251% increase in organic traffic and a 3,446% increase in ad conversions following our marketing audit work. The numbers come from understanding what is not working and changing it.

What a brand audit covers

A thorough brand audit has five parts.

Visual identity audit: your logo, colour palette, typography and imagery. Are they consistent across your website, social media, business cards and email signatures? A mismatched brand looks unprofessional and confuses customers.

Messaging audit: your brand voice, tagline, value proposition and key messages. Do they still reflect what you offer? A brand voice that uses formal language while your website copy is casual signals inconsistency.

Positioning audit: how you compare with competitors. What makes your business different? If your unique selling proposition is not clear to a new visitor, your positioning needs work. Victory Digital helps clients define and articulate their USP through structured brand positioning work.

Customer perception audit: what customers actually say about you. Read your Google reviews, Trustpilot profile and social media comments. Compare this with the brand image you intend to project. A gap between the two is a problem the audit will highlight.

Digital presence audit: your website, social media profiles and any other online touchpoints. Load speed, mobile responsiveness, SEO basics and content freshness all affect how your brand is perceived online. How to run a brand audit in five steps

First, gather everything: your logo files, brand guidelines (if you have them), website screenshots, social media profiles, recent marketing materials and any customer feedback you can find.

Second, review your visual identity. Open your website, your social media profiles and a printed business card side by side. Do the colours match exactly? Is the logo the same file or are there different versions?

Third, review your messaging. Read your homepage, your About page and your latest social post aloud. Does the same brand voice come through or do they sound like different businesses?

Fourth, check your market position. Search for three competitors and write down how they present themselves. Where do you stand apart? If you cannot find a clear difference, that is a finding.

Fifth, decide what to fix. Rank issues by impact and cost. A mismatched logo on LinkedIn takes ten minutes to fix. A full brand refresh with new guidelines is a bigger project and may require professional design support. Victory Digital offers branding and design services that cover everything from a logo refresh to a complete brand identity overhaul.

How often should you run a brand audit?

For most small businesses, once a year is enough. If you are launching a new product, rebranding or entering a new market, run one before the project starts. If you have not looked at your brand in three years, now is the time.
