What are content marketing KPIs and how do you measure them?

Content marketing KPIs are the numbers you track to know whether your content is working. Without them, you are guessing whether the blog posts, guides and case studies you publish are bringing in new customers or just taking up space on your website.

The difference between a KPI and a vanity metric is simple. A vanity metric is a number that looks good in a report but does not tell you whether your business is growing. Total page views and social media followers are vanity metrics on their own they feel good but they do not tell you if anyone booked a call. A KPI ties directly to a business outcome enquiries, revenue or measurable progress toward a marketing goal.

Which KPIs matter for content marketing

Not every content marketing KPI applies to every business. The ones you choose should match where you are in the funnel and what kind of content you produce. Here are the four groups that matter most for small and medium businesses.

Traffic and visibility KPIs

Organic traffic to your content pages is the foundation. If nobody visits your articles, nothing else matters. The key metrics here are:

Organic sessions from search engines, tracked in Google Analytics 4. Month on month growth is the trend to watch, not the absolute number.

Impressions and average position in Google Search Console. These tell you whether Google is showing your pages for the keywords you target, and whether you are moving up or down.

Click through rate from search results. A page ranking at position 5 with a 2% CTR has room to improve its title and meta description even if the ranking stays the same.

Engagement KPIs

Getting someone to visit your article is only the start. You need to know whether they actually read it or whether they bounced in three seconds.

Average engagement time per session in GA4. If visitors spend more than 30 seconds on a blog post, they are engaging with the content.

Scroll depth on longer articles. If readers reach the CTA at the bottom, the content is working. Victory Digital's client dashboard tracks these engagement signals so you can see which pages hold attention and which do not.

Pages per session. A visitor who reads one article and leaves shows interest in a single topic. A visitor who clicks through to a second or third page is starting to explore what your business offers.

Conversion KPIs

This is where content marketing shows its value. A conversion does not have to be a sale. It can be any action that moves someone closer to becoming a customer.

Form fills from content pages. Track which blog posts drive enquiries, not just which pages get the most traffic.

CTA clicks. Whether it is a "book a call" link, a free report download or a newsletter signup, the number of people who take the next step is the most important number in your content operation. Victory Digital's free SEO report at https://victory.digital/run-a-seo-report is itself a content marketing lead magnet that converts visitors into enquiries.

Assisted conversions in GA4. A visitor might find you through a blog post, leave, return through a Google ad, and then book a call. GA4's model attribution credits the content that started the journey.

Revenue and ROI KPIs

Ultimately content marketing needs to earn more than it costs. This is the group most businesses skip because it is harder to measure.

Cost per lead from content channels. Divide your content spend by the number of enquiries that came from content. Victory Digital's content marketing packages start from GBP 849 per month for a content-only plan, with higher tiers including strategy and distribution at GBP 1,679, GBP 2,528 and GBP 4,200.

Revenue attributed to content. If you can trace a new client back to a blog post or guide they read before they enquired, you can calculate what each article earned.

Return on investment. Compare the revenue from content generated leads against what you spent creating and distributing it. Our case studies show what proper content marketing delivers: TrustATrader saw a 400% increase in organic visibility, and Home Instead achieved a 251% lift in organic traffic alongside a 3,446% increase in ad conversions through integrated content and paid campaigns.

How to set your KPIs

Start with one KPI per stage of the funnel. Pick one visibility metric (organic traffic), one engagement metric (average time on page), one conversion metric (enquiries from blog content) and one revenue metric (cost per lead). Measure them for three months before adding more. Too many KPIs at once make it impossible to know what to fix first.

Your client dashboard at https://victory.digital/client-dashboard pulls all these metrics into one place. Monthly reports at https://victory.digital/latest-seo-reports show the trend lines so you can see whether your content is improving month on month rather than getting lost in spreadsheets.

If you need help deciding which KPIs to track or how to set them up in GA4 and Search Console, Victory Digital's content marketing team works with businesses across the UK.
