How long should a blog post be in 2026?
There is no single perfect length for a blog post in 2026, but most business posts work best between 1,200 and 2,000 words. That range gives you room to answer a question properly without padding the answer to hit an arbitrary number. The right length always depends on what the reader needs.
Why word count became the rule
For years, the common advice was that Google rewarded long content. The logic went that longer pages meant more depth, which meant better rankings. Google has said plainly, more than once, that word count is not a ranking factor. What matters is whether the page answers the question better than the other results.
That is not to say length is irrelevant. A 300-word answer cannot cover a topic like "how do we plan a year of content marketing" properly, and a 3,000-word essay is overkill for "what is a meta description". Length follows the question, not the other way round.
Match the length to the intent
- Short answers (300 to 600 words) suit single, factual questions such as "what is a 301 redirect" or "how do I fix a broken link".
- Standard guides (1,200 to 2,000 words) cover most business topics: one clear question, answered in enough depth that the reader does not need to open five other tabs.
- Pillar pages (2,500 words and up) earn their length only when the topic genuinely demands it, such as a complete guide to a service or a full year of strategy.
Most blog posts for small and medium businesses belong in the middle band. If you are writing more than 2,000 words, ask what each extra section adds. If you cannot justify it, cut it.
What changed in 2026: AI search rewards answers, not word counts
AI Overviews and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity now sit between your content and your customers. These systems prefer pages that state the answer early and structure the information clearly. A post that opens with the answer, uses headings that make sense on their own and keeps paragraphs short is far more likely to be quoted than a post that saves its point for paragraph nine.
This rewards the same habits that make writing better to read: answer first, structure second, length last. Write the answer in the opening paragraph, then support it. Use one heading per section and keep paragraphs to two to four sentences. Vary the sentence lengths so the writing sounds human.
How we decide length for our clients
At Victory Digital we start from the search query, not a word count. We look at what the client's customers actually ask, check what is ranking for those questions and write the shortest post that answers them completely. That approach has helped clients such as Home Instead grow organic traffic by 251%, and it is why our content appears in AI Overviews as well as the classic results.

Write the post your customers need, then let it earn its place
Content marketing is about answering the questions your customers are actually asking. Our digital marketing packages include content marketing and start from GBP 849 a month, and every piece of content is planned around a real query, not a template.
