What is TikTok for Business and how can your small business use it?

Cai 3 min read 1 viewsSocial Media Marketing

TikTok for Business is the platform's advertising and business management suite. It gives businesses access to TikTok Ads Manager, the Business Center, and TikTok Shop, as well as the Business Suite tools for managing a business profile. If you already know what TikTok is and want to know how to actually use it for marketing and advertising, this is the guide for you.

What TikTok for Business actually is

TikTok for Business is the umbrella name for every tool TikTok provides to businesses. It includes the Ads Manager (where you create and run paid campaigns), the Business Center (where you manage team access and permissions), and TikTok Shop (the in-app commerce platform). It also includes the free Business Account features that let you add a website link, contact details and business category to your profile.

The key distinction from the regular TikTok app is that these tools are designed for marketing and measurement. A personal TikTok account lets you watch and post videos. A TikTok for Business account gives you analytics, ad creation, audience targeting and conversion tracking.

The main tools

TikTok Ads Manager is the command centre for paid campaigns. You set your objective (awareness, consideration or conversion), choose your audience, set a budget and launch your ad. The platform then serves it on the For You feed, in search results or alongside other content. The simplified mode walks you through each step without needing specialist knowledge.

Business Center lets larger teams collaborate. You can invite staff or an agency, assign different permission levels and manage multiple ad accounts from one place. For a small business owner working alone, you can skip this and use Ads Manager directly.

TikTok Shop enables in-app purchasing. Businesses with a Shopify, WooCommerce or other supported store can connect their product catalogue so users can browse and buy without leaving TikTok. This is most relevant for ecommerce and retail brands.

How small businesses can use it

The most common starting point is organic content: posting videos to the For You feed without paying. TikTok's algorithm means a brand with zero followers can still reach thousands of people if the video holds attention. The best small business content on TikTok tends to be behind-the-scenes clips, quick tips, product demonstrations and authentic storytelling rather than polished adverts.

Paid advertising becomes useful once you have a sense of what content works. You can boost a video that already performed well organically (this is called a Spark Ad) and target it more precisely by age, location, interests or behaviour. Minimum daily budgets are low enough to test with small amounts.

Ad formats to know

In-Feed Ads appear in the For You feed and look like ordinary videos. Spark Ads let you boost your own organic posts. TopView Ads appear when a user first opens the app. Branded Hashtag Challenges invite users to create content around your theme. Branded Effects let you create custom filters and AR effects. For most small businesses, In-Feed and Spark Ads are the practical starting points.

Costs and budget

TikTok does not publish fixed CPM rates, but advertisers typically see a range of GBP 5 to 15 per thousand impressions in the UK market. Cost per click varies by industry and targeting. Minimum daily budget is around GBP 10, and TikTok runs an auction system where you bid against other advertisers for the same audience. Starting small and testing is the recommended approach.

When it makes sense for your business

TikTok for Business works well if your audience spends time on the platform and you can produce short-form video content consistently. Businesses in retail, food, beauty, fitness, home improvement, trades and education all have active audiences. It is less useful if your customers are older professionals who do not use the platform, or if your budget cannot stretch to regular video production. In those cases LinkedIn Ads or Google Ads may deliver a better return.
