What is a social media audit and how do you run one?

Cai 3 min readSocial Media Marketing

A social media audit is a structured review of every channel your business posts on, covering profile consistency, content quality, posting rhythm and engagement. It tells you what is working, what is quietly wasting your time, and what to change before you spend another month posting on autopilot. This guide explains what an audit checks and how to run one yourself in an afternoon.

What an audit checks

An audit looks at four things. Are your profiles consistent and up to date across every platform? Is your content reaching the right people? Which posts earn real engagement and which fall flat? And can you see whether any of it leads to enquiries or sales? Most businesses can answer the first question and have no idea about the last one, which is exactly why the audit matters.

Profile consistency

Start with the basics. Open each platform and check that your profile picture, bio, contact details and links all match. A business that presents differently on Instagram and LinkedIn looks careless, and people notice before they decide whether to follow or buy. Update bios so they say what you do in plain English, point every profile link at the right page, and make sure your handle is the same everywhere it is still available.

Content and cadence

Then look at what you post and how often. Scroll through the last couple of months on each channel and note the pattern. Are you posting three times a week on LinkedIn and twice a day on Instagram because that is what the platform rewards, or because you decided it? Is every post a sales message, or are you sharing things people actually find useful? An honest audit usually finds that a small number of posts did almost all the work, and that the rest just filled space. That is a finding, not a failure.

Engagement and audience

Engagement matters more than follower count, but only when it comes from the right people. Check who comments, shares and messages you. If your audience is mostly competitors and other businesses, your content is reaching the wrong room. Look at reach against engagement for individual posts. A post seen by 500 people that earns 40 conversations is performing better than one seen by 5,000 that earns five, because the first is connecting with people who might buy.

What to keep and what to cut

Turn the audit into a short action list. Keep the two or three content types that earn genuine engagement, and cut the ones that only fill the calendar. Fix anything inconsistent on your profiles this week, not next month. Set one goal for the next quarter, whether that is more enquiries from social or a cleaner mix of content, and measure the same numbers again at the end of it.

How often should you audit?

Once a quarter is a sensible rhythm for most businesses. It gives you enough data to spot trends without turning social media into a full-time job. If you have never done one, run a baseline audit now, then repeat it in three months. For businesses that would rather have it done for them, our digital marketing packages start at £849 a month and include a full review of your social channels.
