How to set up your first Meta ad campaign

Cai 4 min readSocial Media Marketing

Meta ads are the paid campaigns you run on Facebook and Instagram through Meta's advertising platform. They let you show ads to specific audiences based on age, location, interests and behaviour, and they work for almost every type of business.

If you have never set one up before, the process breaks into five steps: pick an objective, define your audience, set a budget, create your creative and install the tracking pixel. This guide walks through each one.

Pick your campaign objective

When you open Ads Manager and click Create, the first question is what you want the ad to achieve. Meta groups these into three buckets:

  • Awareness. You want people to see your brand, even if they do not click.
  • Consideration. You want people to engage, visit your site or watch a video.
  • Conversion. You want people to buy, sign up or book.

Pick the objective that matches what you would count as a win. If you want enquiries, choose Conversion, not Awareness. The whole campaign optimises toward the objective you pick, so this choice matters more than any other.

Define your audience

Meta lets you target by location, age, gender, interests and behaviours. You can also upload a customer list to target people who already know you, or create a lookalike audience that finds new people similar to your best customers.

Keep the audience broad enough that Meta has room to optimise. A tight set of interest tags with a tiny radius often drives up cost because there are not enough people in the auction. Start with a realistic geography and age range, then narrow based on what the data tells you.

Set your budget and schedule

You can choose a daily budget (what you spend per day) or a lifetime budget (what you spend over the whole campaign). Most small businesses start with a daily budget of GBP 5 to GBP 20 per ad set.

Meta will suggest a budget, but the suggested figure serves Meta's interests, not yours. Start where you are comfortable and increase only when you see a return you can measure.

Create your ad creative

The creative is the image or video people see, plus the headline, description and call-to-action button. Meta recommends vertical or square images (4:5 or 1:1 ratio) because they take up more space on the mobile feed.

Follow these guidelines for a first ad:

  • Use a single, clear image or a 15-second video.
  • Keep the headline under 40 characters.
  • Write primary text that speaks to one problem, not everything your business does.
  • Include one clear call to action: Book Now, Sign Up, Get Quote.

Install the Meta Pixel

The Meta Pixel is a snippet of code on your website that tracks what people do after clicking your ad. Without it, you cannot measure conversions, build retargeting audiences or optimise toward purchases.

You can also use the Conversions API to send server-side events alongside the pixel, which is more reliable when browsers block cookies.

Measuring results and iterating

Once your campaign has run for at least a week, check these numbers in Ads Manager:

  • CTR (click-through rate). How many people who saw the ad clicked it. Aim for 1 percent or above.
  • CPC (cost per click). What each click cost you. Compare this to your profit per customer.
  • ROAS (return on ad spend). Revenue divided by spend. Anything above 1x means the campaign is paying for itself.

We have run campaigns that delivered over 3,400 percent return on ad spend for one of our clients (a home care franchise, where a carefully targeted local lead campaign filled rotas faster than any other channel). Not every campaign hits that number, but the platform rewards precise targeting and good creative.

If your first campaign does not work as well as you hoped, change one variable at a time: try a different image, a narrower location or a different objective. Never change everything at once, because you will not know which change helped.

When to ask for help

Managing Meta ads well takes time. You need to monitor the campaign, refresh creative before the audience fatigues and interpret the data. If that sounds like more than you can fit into a working week, our digital marketing team runs Meta campaigns alongside SEO and content work, with transparent results in your client dashboard.
