What is social commerce and how do you sell on social media?

Social commerce is the practice of selling products directly within a social media platform, letting customers browse, choose and pay without leaving the app. This guide explains the main platforms that offer social commerce, how it differs from social selling and whether your small business should set up shop in your social feeds.

What social commerce is

Social commerce turns a social media profile into a storefront. Instead of posting a product photo and telling people to click a link in bio, the product is tagged with a price and a buy button, and the transaction happens inside the app. Instagram Shopping, TikTok Shop and Facebook Shops all work this way.

The difference between social commerce and social selling matters. Social selling is the relationship-building side: starting conversations, answering questions and nurturing trust until a customer is ready to buy. Social commerce is the transactional step. A good strategy uses both: social selling builds the relationship, and social commerce closes the sale without friction.

Social commerce has grown because it removes steps from the customer journey. Every extra click between seeing a product and paying for it is a place where the customer drops off. When the checkout is built into the platform the customer is already using, the path from discovery to purchase is a single tap.

Instagram Shopping

Instagram Shopping lets businesses tag up to five products per image or video post, displaying the price and a View Products or View Shop label. Users tap to see details and can check out through Instagram's in-app checkout (available in supported regions) or click through to the website. It works best for visual products: fashion, homeware, gifts, beauty and food. The tag also feeds into Instagram's Shop tab, where users browse products without following specific accounts.

TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop works similarly but leans heavily on video. A product link sits on a creator's video, often as a shopping tag on a Buy Now button. TikTok's algorithm means a product can go from zero to thousands of views in hours if the video catches on. The platform has been testing and expanding its shopping tools, and it is particularly effective for impulse-buy products in categories like beauty, gadgets, home accessories and fashion.

Facebook Shops

Facebook Shops is the most established of the three. A business sets up a Shop on its Facebook Page, adds products and organises them into collections. The shop appears on the Facebook Page, in Marketplace and across Instagram if the accounts are connected. Facebook Shops works best for businesses that already run Facebook ads, because the product catalogue integrates with ad campaigns and retargeting.

Practical setup for small businesses

Setting up social commerce is not complex but does require preparation. You need a product catalogue (a spreadsheet or inventory feed), high-quality photos for each product, clear pricing and descriptions, and a return policy. Each platform has its own setup process, but they all follow the same pattern:

  • Connect your business account to a Commerce account or catalogue tool.
  • Upload your products with images, prices and descriptions.
  • Tag products in your organic posts and videos.
  • Run ads that link directly to product pages in your shop.

You do not need to be on every platform. Pick the one where your audience already spends time and where your product type fits naturally. If you already use Instagram for marketing, start with Instagram Shopping. If you create video content, TikTok Shop may perform better.
