What is Threads and should your business join it?
Threads is Meta's text-based conversation app, launched in July 2023 as a direct alternative to X (formerly Twitter). It connects to your Instagram account, so setting it up takes minutes, and it has grown fast enough that brands still have an early-adopter window to build an audience before the platform saturates. Here is what Threads is, how it works and whether your business should be on it.
What Threads actually is
Threads is a microblogging app where people post short text updates, images and videos. Posts can be up to 500 characters, and you can reply to, repost and quote other people's content just as you would on X. The feed mixes accounts you follow with algorithmic recommendations, and there is no separate direct messaging inbox yet, so conversations happen publicly in the thread under each post.
The platform is built on the same technology as Instagram, and every Threads account is tied to an Instagram account. You cannot sign up without one, which means your existing Instagram followers are easy to find, and your username and profile carry over automatically. That integration is both the biggest advantage and the biggest limitation: it makes sign-up frictionless, but you cannot use Threads independently if you do not already have Instagram.
Threads has around 400 million monthly active users as of late 2025, with estimates pushing towards 450 million in 2026. Daily active users sit at roughly 115 million. That puts it close behind X, which has around 550 million monthly users, and Threads overtook X on mobile daily active users in some regions. The growth has been fast but uneven, with spikes when news events drive sign-ups and quieter periods between.
How businesses use it
Threads works best for brands that already have something to say, rather than brands that need a broadcast channel to push promotions. The early adopters who built the most following tend to be individuals and brands that share behind-the-scenes content, industry commentary, opinions and questions that start conversations. The algorithm rewards replies and engagement, so a post that sparks discussion reaches more people than a polished announcement.
Three approaches work well. The first is thought leadership and expert positioning. If your team has opinions on your industry, Threads is a lower-friction place to share them than LinkedIn, with a more conversational tone. Victory Digital's own team uses this approach to share SEO observations, content marketing ideas and honest takes on algorithm changes.
The second is audience research. Because Threads rewards replies, you can ask questions and get direct, public feedback from people who follow you. That is useful for content planning, product ideas and understanding what your audience cares about right now.
The third is brand personality. Threads has a less polished, more informal feel than Instagram or LinkedIn. Showing the people behind your business, responding to comments in a human voice and joining relevant conversations all build trust over time.
What Threads is not good at
Threads has no advertising platform as of early 2026. There is no way to boost a post, run sponsored content or target an audience with paid reach. Every impression is organic, which means you have to earn attention through content quality and engagement, not budget. If your social strategy relies on paid ads, Threads does not replace anything yet.
The app also lacks some features that businesses rely on on X: no analytics dashboard for accounts, no scheduling via third-party tools (though some have started adding support), and no way to run polls or schedule posts natively. Meta has added features steadily since launch, so many of these gaps will close, but the platform is still behind X on business tooling.
How to judge whether it fits
If you already use Instagram and you have something to say about your industry, the cost of trying Threads is zero. Set up your account, follow people in your sector, share a few observations and see whether the conversations feel useful. If engagement is strong, invest more time. If it is quiet, the platform may not suit your audience yet, and that is fine. Threads is not essential for every business, but the early adopter advantage is real for brands that find their voice on it.
