What are LinkedIn Ads and are they worth it for B2B?
LinkedIn Ads are a paid advertising platform that lets businesses reach professionals based on job title, industry, company size, seniority and hundreds of other B2B targeting criteria. Unlike Google Ads, which targets search intent, or Meta Ads, which targets demographics and behaviour, LinkedIn Ads targets people by who they are at work. That makes it the most expensive social platform per click, but also the most relevant one for business-to-business campaigns.
How LinkedIn Ads work
LinkedIn offers several ad formats. Sponsored Content appears in the feed as native posts, ideal for brand awareness and lead generation. Message Ads land directly in LinkedIn InMail inboxes, best for direct response and event invitations. Text Ads are the small sidebar units, cheaper but lower engagement. Dynamic Ads auto-personalise creative using the viewer's profile data. You bid per click (CPC) or per thousand impressions (CPM), with a minimum daily budget.
Campaign Manager is the self-serve platform where you set objectives (awareness, consideration or conversions), define your audience, choose your format and set your budget. LinkedIn also offers Matched Audiences, which lets you retarget website visitors or upload your own contact lists.
Who LinkedIn Ads works for
LinkedIn Ads performs best when the target audience is narrow and professional. Think software vendors selling to IT managers, recruitment agencies, B2B consultancies and professional services firms targeting senior decision-makers. A local plumber running Facebook Ads would waste their budget on LinkedIn. An accountancy firm targeting finance directors in the South West would find LinkedIn's precision worth the premium.
Cost benchmarks vary widely. Average CPC on LinkedIn runs between GBP 3 and GBP 10 depending on your industry and audience, compared to roughly GBP 0.50 to GBP 2 on Google Search or Meta. CPMs average GBP 25 to GBP 50. These higher costs are justified when your offer is high-value enough that reaching the right person matters more than reaching a lot of people. A single qualified B2B lead can be worth hundreds or thousands of pounds, so paying GBP 7 a click to reach a procurement director is a better deal than paying 50p to reach a general consumer.
Are they worth it for B2B?
The short answer is yes, when you do them right. LinkedIn's own data shows that 80% of B2B leads come from LinkedIn campaigns, and 4 out of 5 B2B marketers say LinkedIn generates the highest quality leads of any social platform. The platform's targeting precision means you can reach decision-makers who are almost impossible to find on other channels.
But LinkedIn Ads are not a set-and-forget channel. Success requires strong creative, a properly structured account with negative targeting to exclude irrelevant roles, and enough budget to let the algorithm learn. A minimum monthly spend of around GBP 500 to GBP 1,000 is typical before you see meaningful results.
If you are marketing products or services that other businesses buy, LinkedIn Ads are worth testing alongside search and content marketing. Victory Digital manages LinkedIn Ads campaigns alongside our wider digital marketing services, with packages starting from GBP 849 per month covering campaign setup, audience research, ad copy and ongoing optimisation.
Getting started with LinkedIn Ads
Start with a clear offer and one audience segment. Run two or three ad variations with different headlines and images. Set a small daily budget (GBP 20 to GBP 50) and let the campaign run for at least two weeks before judging performance. Track conversions, not just clicks and impressions.
