What is Smart Bidding and should you use it?

Smart Bidding is Google's name for bid strategies that use machine learning to set your bids in real time. Instead of you choosing a fixed cost-per-click for a keyword, Smart Bidding looks at the context of each search, the device, the location, the time of day and dozens of other signals, and adjusts the bid to try to get you the best result for your goal.

The promise is simple: Google sees more data than any human can, so let the algorithm choose the bid. The trade-off is control. You tell Google what matters (conversions, conversion value, target cost) and it handles the micro-decisions. Here is what each strategy does and when it earns its place.

The main Smart Bidding strategies

Target CPA (Cost Per Acquisition). You set an average cost you are willing to pay per conversion, say GBP 50. Google adjusts bids to get as many conversions as possible near that target. It works best when you have a clear, single conversion goal and enough conversion history to train the model. Campaigns with fewer than 15 to 30 conversions in the last 30 days often struggle because the algorithm has too little data to learn from.

Target ROAS (Return on Ad Spend). You set a target return, for example 400% (GBP 4 revenue for every GBP 1 spend). Google optimises bids to maximise conversion value at that return rate. This strategy needs conversion tracking with accurate value data. It is the right choice for ecommerce campaigns where each sale has a known value, and it pairs naturally with the conversion tracking our PPC team sets up as part of campaign management.

Maximise Conversions. Google spends your full daily budget to get as many conversions as possible, with no target cost. It is the easiest strategy to set up and often the starting point for accounts with little conversion data. Once the algorithm learns, you can switch to Target CPA or Target ROAS and add a constraint. The risk is that without a cost ceiling, a few expensive clicks can burn through your budget early in the day.

Maximise Conversion Value. The value-focused version of Maximise Conversions. Google optimises for total conversion value rather than raw conversion count. Use this when some conversions are worth more than others, for example a lead for a high-ticket service versus a newsletter sign-up.

When Smart Bidding works well

Smart Bidding shines in accounts with consistent conversion volume and accurate tracking. The algorithm needs data, so campaigns that have been running for a few months and generate at least 15 to 30 conversions per month tend to see the best results. It also handles seasonality well. If your business gets more enquiries in January than December, Smart Bidding adjusts bids automatically without you needing to set up manual bid adjustments for every month.

When manual bidding still wins

Manual bidding keeps you in control. If you work in a niche industry with a small budget, a low search volume or very few conversions, the algorithm has little to learn from and can waste spend. Manual CPC also matters when you need to bid aggressively for specific terms that drive high-quality leads, or when you are launching a brand new campaign with zero conversion history. Our Digital Marketing packages include campaign setup and management, which means your account structure and conversion tracking are built to the standard Smart Bidding needs before the automation is turned on.

Should you use it?

Start with Maximise Conversions on a campaign that has good conversion tracking and at least a month of data. Let it run for two to three weeks and compare the cost per conversion against your manual bids. If the automated version delivers the same or better results at a similar or lower cost, Smart Bidding is working. If not, the foundation, either tracking or account structure, needs fixing first.

The best approach is not to pick one strategy and never revisit it. The right bid strategy changes as your campaign matures, your data grows and your goals shift. Testing one new strategy for a few weeks, comparing the numbers and keeping what works is how you get the best from both automation and human judgement.
