What is Performance Max and when should you use it?
Performance Max is Google's fully automated campaign type that runs across every Google surface from a single setup. Instead of building separate campaigns for Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Maps and Discovery, you give Performance Max a set of assets and a budget, and Google's machine learning decides where and when to show your ads to meet your goal.
The promise is reach without the management overhead. The trade-off is transparency. You can see where your ads appeared in the Insights report, but you cannot pause an under-performing placement or adjust a bid by channel. Google acts on your behalf across its whole network.
How Performance Max works
You supply three things: a conversion goal (for instance, maximise conversions or target a cost per acquisition), a daily budget, and a set of creative assets. The assets include up to 15 headlines, 5 descriptions, 5 images, a logo and an optional YouTube video. Google then combines these into ads tailored to each surface, automatically testing combinations and shifting spend toward what works.
The campaign type also pulls product data from your Merchant Centre feed if you sell online, making it a direct replacement for Smart Shopping campaigns (which Google phased out in 2022).
When Performance Max earns its place
Performance Max shines when you want to reach people across Google's full network without building and maintaining a dozen campaigns. It works well for ecommerce businesses with a complete Merchant Centre feed, for remarketing across channels, and for advertisers who have enough conversion data to train the algorithm. A campaign with 30 or more conversions in the last 30 days gives the machine learning model a solid base to optimise from.
It also suits businesses that want one clean campaign structure without the complexity of bid adjustments, ad scheduling and device modifiers. The automation handles those decisions so you can focus on creative and strategy.
When to stick with Standard campaigns
Standard Search and Display campaigns still win when you need precise control. If you want to bid differently for branded versus generic terms, exclude certain placements, or cap bids by location, a standard campaign lets you set those rules directly. Performance Max gives you signals and insights, not knobs and dials.
New accounts with very little conversion data also struggle with Performance Max because the algorithm has too few examples to learn from. A campaign with fewer than 15 conversions in 30 days will often perform better with a simpler Maximise Clicks strategy in a standard Search campaign until the data builds up.
The honest expectation
Performance Max is not a set-and-forget magic bullet. It still needs good creative assets, accurate conversion tracking and a sensible budget. You should review the Insights page weekly, look for asset performance trends, and replace under-performing headlines and images. Google's algorithm is powerful, but it works best when you feed it quality inputs and review the outputs.
Victory Digital sets up and manages Performance Max campaigns as part of our PPC management service. We handle the tracking, the asset creation and the ongoing optimisation so you get the reach without the complexity.
