How to set up conversion tracking in Google Ads

Conversion tracking in Google Ads tells you what happens after someone clicks your ad. Without it, you know how many clicks you bought but not whether any of them turned into a lead, a sale or a phone call. With it, you know which keywords and ads produce real results and which ones just burn your budget.\n\nThis guide walks through the setup step by step. It assumes you already have a Google Ads account and a Google account for your website. If you are not running ads yet, start with our beginner's guide to running a Google Ads campaign (https://victory.digital/how-to-run-a-google-ads-campaign).\n\nWhat counts as a conversion\n\nA conversion is any valuable action a visitor takes after clicking your ad. The usual candidates are: a form submission, a phone call, a newsletter signup, a product purchase or a button click on your thank-you page. What matters is that you define it in advance and track it consistently.\n\nIf you track the wrong action, or nothing at all, Google Ads optimises for clicks - and clicks alone rarely pay the bills. Our guide to conversion rates (https://victory.digital/what-is-a-conversion-rate-and-how-do-you-improve-it) explains the thinking behind choosing the right action to measure.\n\nStep 1: Install the Google tag on your website\n\nGoogle Tag Manager is the free tool that holds all your tracking tags in one place. Install the Tag Manager container snippet on every page of your website. Once it is live, you can add and update tags without editing your site code.\n\nIf you already have Google Tag Manager installed, skip to step 2. If you need help, read our full guide (https://victory.digital/what-is-google-tag-manager-and-how-do-you-use-it).\n\nStep 2: Create the Google Ads conversion tag in Tag Manager\n\nIn Google Tag Manager, create a new tag. Choose the Google Ads conversion tracking tag type. Google Ads will give you a conversion ID and a conversion label for each action you want to track. Enter those into the tag configuration in Tag Manager.\n\nKey settings:\n- Set the trigger to fire only on the page where the conversion happens, usually your thank-you or confirmation page.\n- Use a URL rule such as \"page URL contains /thank-you/\" so the tag fires only when it should.\n- Leave the firing option as \"Page view\" unless you have a specific reason to use an event-based trigger.\n\nStep 3: Define conversion actions in Google Ads\n\nIn your Google Ads account, go to Tools and measurements > Conversions. Click the plus button to create a new conversion action.\n\nChoose \"Website\" as the source, since your conversion tag is on your site. Give the action a clear name like \"Contact form submission\" or \"Purchase\". Set the value if you know the average worth of each conversion - this lets Google Ads optimise for value rather than just counting actions.\n\nLeave the counting method as \"Every\" if each conversion matters independently, or switch to \"One\" per person if you only care about unique leads.\n\nStep 4: Link Tag Manager to Google Ads\n\nIn Tag Manager, link your Google Ads account under Admin > Google Ads Linking. This lets Tag Manager send conversion data directly to Google Ads. The link takes effect once you publish a new version of the container from Tag Manager.\n\nTest the tag before going live using Tag Manager's preview mode. Browse to your thank-you page and check that the tag fires in the preview panel.\n\nCommon pitfalls\n\n- Firing the tag on every page. A conversion tag that fires on all pages counts every visit as a conversion. That floods your data with noise and makes optimisation impossible. Use a URL rule restricted to the conversion page only.\n\n- Not testing the tag. A mistyped conversion ID or a wrong trigger rule produces no data at all, and you will not know for days or weeks. Always use preview mode and also check the Google Ads reporting page a day after launch to confirm data is appearing.\n\n- Starting ads before tracking is working. Once real data starts flowing, Google Ads' Smart Bidding can use your conversion history to bid more intelligently. If tracking launches three weeks late, every campaign built in that period was optimised on guesswork.\n\nNext steps after setup\n\nOnce conversion tracking is recording data, you can use it to improve your account. Switch to a bid strategy that targets conversions (Target CPA or Target ROAS). Build audiences from people who converted and run remarketing campaigns. Use your conversion data to pause the keywords, ads and campaigns that cost money and produce nothing.\n\nIf you want a hand setting this up or reviewing your current tracking, Victory Digital's PPC team can audit your account.
