What is Google Merchant Center and how do you set it up?
Google Merchant Center is a free Google tool that uploads and manages the product data your business sends to Google Shopping, free product listings and unpaid surfaces. Without it, Google Shopping ads cannot run. Think of Merchant Center as the engine room: it tells Google what you sell, what it costs, whether it is in stock and where the image lives.
Why Merchant Center matters
If you sell physical products online, Google Shopping is one of the most visible ad formats in search. But Shopping does not read your website the way a standard ad does. It reads a product feed: a structured file that contains every product you want to advertise, with fields like title, price, availability, Google product category and image link. The feed comes from Merchant Center.
Without a feed, your products cannot appear in Shopping ads, free product listings on Google Shopping or the shopping tab in Google Search. Small businesses that rely on ecommerce miss this channel entirely.
What you can do with Merchant Center
Submit product data. Upload your product feed as a file (TXT, XML or spreadsheet), through the Content API, or by linking an ecommerce platform. Feed rules let you modify data without editing your source file.
Set up promotions and reviews. You can add free product ratings, sale prices and shipping promotions on qualifying products. Each channel you add requires one extra step in the Merchant Center dashboard.
Manage products across Google surfaces. Once your feed is live, products appear in Google Shopping, free listings and, when they qualify, on YouTube, Images and Google Lens.
Check feed health. The Diagnostics tab shows errors, warnings and disapproved products, with a reason and a link to the specific item so you can fix problems fast.
How to get started
Create a Merchant Center account at merchants.google.com using your Google account and business details. Verify and claim your website URL in the account.
Create a product feed. Start with the required attributes: id, title, description, link, image link, price, availability and Google product category. Most ecommerce platforms including Shopify, WooCommerce and Squarespace have a Google Shopping integration that generates the feed automatically.
Submit and monitor. Upload the feed, set a schedule (daily is standard) and check Diagnostics for errors. Fix disapprovals by matching the attribute values to Google's feed specification.
Link to Google Ads. Once the feed is live and approved, go to your Google Ads account and create a Shopping campaign. The ads pull product information directly from your Merchant Center feed, so any update you make in the feed updates your ads automatically.
Common feed issues
Most disapprovals come from a handful of problems. Missing or mismatched product categories are the most common: each product must map to a Google taxonomy category such as "Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Dresses". Missing image links or images smaller than 100 by 100 pixels also cause disapprovals. The Diagnostics tab shows exactly which row failed and the fix you need to apply.
Supplementary feeds let you add or override attributes without changing your main feed. This is useful for sale pricing, promotions or updating shipping costs for specific products.
