What is Google Ads Quality Score and why does it matter?
Google Ads Quality Score is Google's rating of how relevant your ad, your keywords and your landing page are to the person searching. It runs from 1 to 10 and sits on each keyword in your account. It does not decide whether your ad wins the auction, but it has a big say in what position your ad earns and how much each click costs you.
A higher score makes Google treat your ads as more useful to searchers, which means you can often rank above competitors while paying less per click. A lower score does the opposite: fewer impressions, higher costs and ads that lose out to rivals bidding the same amount.
What makes up your Quality Score
Google judges three things for every keyword:
- Expected click-through rate: how likely your ad is to be clicked compared with similar ads. Ads that earn clicks look useful to Google.
- Ad relevance: how closely your keyword, your ad text and the search query match. An ad promising "cheap web hosting" that appears for "managed WordPress hosting" scores poorly here.
- Landing page experience: whether the page you send people to is fast, easy to use and directly related to the ad. A slow page that ignores the promise in your ad drags the score down.
The three components are not weighted equally. The weakest one for your keyword pulls the overall score down hardest, which makes the score a useful early warning system rather than a vague report card.
Why it matters for your budget
The score feeds directly into your cost per click. Two advertisers can bid the same amount for the same keyword and pay very different prices, because Google applies an effective discount to the account with the better score. Relevance is rewarded twice, once in position and once in price.
The score is reported per keyword, which makes the fix list easy to find. Scores of 7 and above are generally strong. A score of 5 or below means something in the chain is out of step, usually the ad, the keyword or the landing page.
How to improve a low score
- Rewrite the ad so it says what the searcher means, not just who your company is.
- Tighten the keyword list so each ad group only covers searches it can honestly answer.
- Send clicks to a landing page that loads quickly and delivers what the ad promised.
- Pause keywords that never climb past a weak score, and let the budget follow the winners.
None of this is a quick trick. Quality Score rewards the same things your customers reward: relevant ads, honest promises and pages that work. If your account is paying more per click than it should, the score on your keywords will usually tell you where the problem is.
