What is search engine marketing (SEM) and how does it work?

Cai 3 min readUncategorised

Search engine marketing (SEM) is the practice of using both organic and paid strategies to get your business seen in search engine results. It covers the two ways people find you on Google and other search engines: SEO for the free listings and paid advertising for the sponsored results. When you run both well, your business can appear twice on the same search results page, which doubles your chance of a click.

SEM is not a synonym for SEO. SEO is the organic half: improving your website so Google ranks it higher naturally through technical health, relevant content and authority from other sites linking to you. Paid search, often called PPC (pay per click), is the other half: bidding on keywords so your ad appears above or alongside the organic results. SEM is the umbrella strategy that decides how much to invest in each channel and how to make them work together.

How SEM works

When someone types a question into Google, the results page shows two types of listings. The paid results at the top and bottom are marked as ads. Between them sit the organic results, which Google has decided are the most relevant answers to that search. SEM covers both.

Paid search works on an auction system. You bid on keywords that your customers search for. When someone searches that term, Google runs an auction and your ad appears if your bid and quality score beat the competition. You only pay when someone clicks.

SEO does not cost per click. Instead you invest in making your site the kind of result Google wants to show. That means fast loading pages, clear answers to what people search for, secure connections and links from other trusted websites.

Why SEM matters for small businesses

If someone searches for a service you offer and your business is nowhere on the page, you may as well not exist to that customer. A well run SEM strategy covers both timeframes.

Paid search gets you visible immediately. Set up a Google Ads campaign and your ad can appear within hours. This is useful for time-sensitive offers, new businesses that have not built organic authority yet, or competitive terms where organic rankings take months to earn.

SEO takes longer but costs less per click over time. Once a page ranks well, it keeps bringing traffic without paying for each visit. A 3 to 6 month investment in SEO typically compounds: our client TrustATrader saw a 400% increase in organic traffic, and Home Instead Basingstoke recorded a 251% rise in organic visits alongside a 3,446% increase in ad conversions from their paid campaigns.

Running both together means you capture the search result from both angles. When a searcher sees your ad at the top and your organic listing below it, they are far more likely to click. Google reports that advertisers see roughly a 50% lift in clicks when both a paid and organic listing appear together.

What SEM costs

Paid search costs depend on your industry, the keywords you target and how competitive those terms are. You set your own daily budget and only pay when someone clicks. Victory Digital's digital marketing packages start at GBP 849 per month and include campaign setup, ongoing management and optimisation.

SEO investment starts from GBP 980 per month for 15 hours of work and goes up to GBP 3,920 per month for 75 hours. Results build over 3 to 6 months, but the return compounds over time: many local businesses see a 3x to 5x return within the first year.

Whether you start with SEO, paid search or both depends on your goals, budget and how quickly you need results. SEM is the framework that lets you make that decision based on real data rather than guesswork.
