What is marketing attribution and how do you choose a model?

Understanding which marketing channel drove a customer to contact you is one of the hardest questions in small business marketing. Did they find you through Google search, click a Facebook ad, open an email, or come back after reading a blog post you published three months ago? Marketing attribution answers that question.

What is marketing attribution?

Marketing attribution is the process of identifying which touchpoints in a customer's journey contributed to a conversion. Instead of guessing, it uses data to assign credit across channels so you know where to invest your budget next month.

Without attribution, the last channel a customer touched before converting often takes all the credit. That is called last-click attribution, and it is the default in most analytics tools. It is also misleading. A customer might have found you through an organic search, read three blog posts, clicked a retargeting ad, and then searched your brand name before calling. Last-click gives full credit to the brand search. The SEO work that started the journey gets nothing.

The main attribution models

There are several models, each with a different view of the customer journey:

First-click attribution. All credit goes to the first touchpoint. Useful for understanding which channels generate awareness and initial interest, but it ignores everything after.

Last-click attribution. The final touchpoint before conversion gets full credit. Simple to set up and the default in many platforms, but it undervalues the middle and top of the funnel.

Linear attribution. Every touchpoint in the journey gets equal credit. A fairer picture than single-touch models, and a good starting point when you are not sure which model to use.

Time-decay attribution. Touchpoints closer to the conversion get more credit. This recognises that the final nudge is often critical while still acknowledging earlier interactions. It works well for shorter sales cycles.

Data-driven attribution. The platform (Google Ads, Meta, GA4) uses machine learning to assign credit based on what actually drives conversions. This is the most accurate model, but it needs enough conversion data to train the algorithm. Google recommends at least 30 conversions in 30 days for data-driven attribution to be reliable.

Which model should a small business choose?

If you have limited conversion data, start with linear or time-decay attribution. They give a more honest picture than last-click without needing hundreds of conversions to train a model. As you gather more data and use tools like Google Analytics 4, you can move toward data-driven attribution.

The key is consistency. Pick one model, run with it for three months, and compare channel performance within that model. Switching models every month makes it impossible to see whether a channel is improving or your measurement changed.

How GA4 and UTM codes help

Google Analytics 4 uses an event-based data model that tracks the full customer journey across devices and sessions. When you pair it with UTM codes on your campaigns, every click is tagged with its source, medium and campaign name. The Victory Digital client dashboard pulls this data together so you can see at a glance which channels are driving enquiries and revenue.

Attribution in practice

One of our clients, TrustATrader, grew enquiries by more than 400% through a combination of SEO, PPC and content marketing. Attribution showed that organic search started most journeys, but remarketing ads closed many of them. Without attribution data, the remarketing budget would have looked less effective because it rarely recorded the first touchpoint. The data let them invest confidently across both channels rather than guessing.
