What is website maintenance and why does your small business need it?

Website maintenance is the regular process of checking, updating and improving your website to keep it secure, fast and working properly. It covers everything from updating plugins and patching security holes to refreshing content and checking that forms, links and checkout pages still work.

Most small business owners treat a website as a one-off cost: you pay for it once, and it sits there doing its job. The reality is different. Websites are software, and just like the apps on your phone, they need updates. Without regular maintenance, your site can become slower, less secure, and less visible on Google.

What website maintenance actually includes

A typical website maintenance programme covers several areas.

Security updates. Platforms like WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace release security patches regularly. An unpatched site is an open door for hackers. According to the government's Cyber Security Breaches Survey, around a third of UK businesses reported a cyber security breach in the previous twelve months, and for many the entry point was an unpatched website or plugin.

Software and plugin updates. Every third-party tool on your site - contact forms, appointment booking, payment gateways, analytics plugins - needs updating to stay compatible. An incompatible plugin can break your site entirely.

Content refreshes. Old blog posts with outdated statistics, expired offers, or broken links damage your credibility. Google also ranks pages lower when the content is stale. A regular content review keeps your site relevant.

Performance monitoring. Slow pages lose customers. Google uses page speed as a ranking factor, and Core Web Vitals measure how quickly your pages load on desktop and mobile. A maintenance routine includes checking these metrics and addressing slowdowns before they affect your rankings.

Broken link checks. Links rot. A product page 404s, an external site you linked to goes offline, your contact form stops sending emails. Regular link checks catch these before a potential customer hits a dead end.

Backups. A full website backup means that if something goes wrong - a bad update, a hack, an accidental deletion - you can restore the entire site. Most web hosts offer automated backups, but you should verify they are running and test a restoration at least once a quarter.

How often does your website need maintenance?

The right frequency depends on your platform and how complex your site is.

For a simple brochure site on a managed platform (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify), a monthly check is usually enough: verify the site loads, check forms work, look for broken links, and review any platform updates.

For a WordPress site, which is more customisable but needs more hands-on care, the recommendation is weekly plugin updates and a full monthly maintenance session.

For an ecommerce site handling payments and customer data, weekly security scans and updates are the minimum.

The cost of ignoring website maintenance

The most visible cost is security. An unmaintained website is the single most common entry point for small business cyber attacks. The cost of cleaning a hacked site and restoring customer trust far exceeds the cost of regular maintenance.

The second cost is visibility. Google's algorithm rewards fresh, well-maintained sites. If your site loads slowly, has broken pages, or uses outdated technology, it will lose rankings to competitors who keep their sites in better shape.

The third cost is conversions. A contact form that stopped working, a booking system with a certificate error, a checkout page that times out - each one is lost business you may never know about.
