How to use Canva to create branded social media graphics for your small business
Canva is the easiest way for a small business to produce on-brand social media graphics without hiring a designer. This guide walks you through the process from choosing a template to exporting a post-ready file, using the same steps our animation and design team follows when setting up assets for clients.
What you need before you start
Before you open Canva, gather the assets that define your brand: your logo in PNG format, your brand colours (hex codes if you have them, or the colour names), the fonts you use on your website and a recent product or team photo you want to feature. Having these ready saves you jumping between tabs mid-design.
Step 1: Set up your brand kit in Canva
If you have a Canva Pro account, the Brand Kit feature is the most powerful tool for keeping your graphics consistent. Open Canva, click the Brand tab in the left sidebar and upload your logo. Add your brand colours by pasting the hex codes into the colour fields. Set your brand fonts from the dropdown. Once this is done, every template you open will automatically use your colours and fonts.
The free version of Canva does not include Brand Kit, but you can still keep things consistent by saving your colours in a text file and pasting the codes into each design manually. It takes an extra minute per graphic.
Step 2: Start from a social media template
Click Create a Design and choose your format. For Instagram square posts, use 1080 x 1080 px. For Facebook and LinkedIn feed posts, use 1200 x 628 px. For Instagram Stories or TikTok, use the 1080 x 1920 Story format.
Canva then shows you thousands of templates for each format. Search for something relevant to your post, such as "product launch", "special offer" or "behind the scenes". The search bar is the fastest way to find the right starting point.
Step 3: Swap in your brand assets
Click any text box and type your own message. Use the Brand Kit to apply your colours to backgrounds, shapes and text in one click. If you are on the free plan, use the colour picker in the top toolbar to paste your hex codes manually.
Upload your own images by clicking Uploads and dragging them into the design. Replace any template images by clicking the image then selecting Replace Image in the top toolbar. This is where the product photo or team shot you prepared earlier goes.
Step 4: Add your logo
Your logo should appear on every graphic, usually in the bottom right or top left corner. Upload it once via the Uploads tab, then drag it into position. Canva keeps your uploaded files between sessions, so you only do this once.
Step 5: Export and post
When the design is ready, click Share then Download. PNG is the best format for social media because it keeps the colours and sharpness. Set the file name to something you can find later, such as "ig-product-launch-oct2026.png". JPEG works too if file size is a concern.
If you are posting the same message to multiple platforms, use Canva's Resize feature. It adapts your design to every format you need in one click, saving you from recreating the post for each platform.
When to call a designer instead
Canva is excellent for daily social posts, limited-time offers and announcements. But it cannot replace a professional graphic designer for high-stakes assets such as your main website hero images, printed brochures, large-format banners and brand style guides. The templates limit what you can do, and your business will eventually outgrow the tool. When that happens, our animation and design team can take your brand further at https://victory.digital/graphic-design.
If you are just starting out and need a quick, professional look without the budget for a retainer, Canva with a well-prepared Brand Kit is a solid next step.
