What is Figma and how can small businesses use it for design?
Figma is a browser-based design tool used by designers to create websites, apps, logos and marketing materials. Unlike traditional design software that lives on one computer, Figma lives in the cloud and lets multiple people work on the same file at the same time. This guide explains what it does, how the free tier works and whether your business needs it.
What Figma is
Figma is a vector-based design tool that runs entirely in a web browser. There is no software to install, no files to email and no version confusion because every change saves automatically. Designers use it for everything from wireframes and user-interface mock-ups to social media graphics and presentation decks.
The platform is best known for collaborative design. Multiple people can edit the same file at the same time, see each other's cursors in real time and leave comments on specific elements. This makes it the industry standard for teams working on website projects, app interfaces and brand assets.
Figma is not a simplified tool for non-designers the way Canva is. It is a professional design environment with a learning curve. However, small business owners often encounter Figma in one specific situation: their designer shares a Figma link so they can review a website layout, approve a logo concept or leave feedback on a brochure without installing any software.
Free versus paid
Figma's free Starter plan is generous. You can create unlimited files, store designs in the cloud, collaborate with up to three editors and export your work as PNG, JPG, SVG or PDF. For a small business reviewing design proofs from an agency, the free tier is all you need.
The Professional plan costs about USD 12 per editor per month and adds unlimited editors, version history, shared fonts and advanced prototyping. The Organisation and Enterprise plans add admin controls, design system libraries and single sign-on for larger teams.
Figma also owns FigJam, a free online whiteboard tool for brainstorming, user journey mapping and planning sessions. It is included with the same free Starter plan.
How businesses use Figma
Most small businesses do not design in Figma themselves. They receive a Figma link from their web designer or agency. Clicking the link opens the design in a browser with no sign-up required. You can zoom in, click through prototype links, leave comments and download the final assets.
If you run a product business or an ecommerce store with an in-house marketing team, Figma is worth adopting. Your team can work alongside a designer on landing pages, email templates and ad creative without the back-and-forth of exporting and re-importing files across different software.
Limits to be aware of
Figma works in RGB colour space, which displays well on screens but does not translate directly to CMYK for printed brochures or business cards. Print-ready artwork still needs Adobe InDesign or a professional print setup.
Figma also does not replace a strategic designer. The tool makes collaboration efficient, but it does not generate the brand strategy, typographic knowledge or layout expertise that comes from a trained professional. For high-stakes projects, a designer using Figma gives you the best of both worlds: the collaboration benefits of the tool with the creative direction of a human.
