Do you need a break from social media?

Every generation has something, it used to be “too much tv will give you square eyes” then it was “video games will make you violent” and now some people believe that too much social media can be bad for your mental health.

The first two myths have been debunked but there could be something in it when they say social media can be bad for your mental health.

At Victory.Digital we can share the burden of social media with you, a problem shared is a problem halved, as they say, we can help with page optimisation, replying to messages and supporting you with content for your page.

Here are some common signs that you may need a break from social media.

  1. You compare everybody else’s life to yours.
    1. “why is their life so much better than mine” (The secret is, it isn’t, they just post stuff that makes you think they are having a great time).
  2. You scroll without realising.
    1. Similar to cigarette breaks, it can become a habit.
  3. Everything you see aggravates you.
  4. You get “FOMO” (Fear of missing out) when you cannot access your news feed.
  5. You spend a considerable amount of time scrolling on your chosen platform.
    1. During a break 10-15 minutes isn’t too bad but when it becomes hours you may want to consider having a break.
  6. Do you need to post something and get likes to feel validated?
    1. Any social event or family announcement, do you have to post about it?
  7. One study (sponsored by Facebook) found that 80% of smartphone users checked their phone within the first 15 minutes of waking up.
  8. Social media has become a chore.
    1. Social media isn’t mandatory, you don’t have to post.

The biggest takeaway from this should be that social media isn’t bad, it can be a great tool, it can make people famous and it can help brands grow overnight but everyone is susceptible to social media burnout.

Sometimes a break is all you need is a break.
